Ethereum has staged an impressive recovery after a sharp market selloff, climbing more than 4% in 24 hours as buyers returned near an important support level.
On October 16, 2026, the second-largest cryptocurrency traded around $2,462 after briefly falling toward $2,325 during the previous session.
The rebound has renewed optimism among traders, with analysts closely watching whether Ethereum can move above the critical $2,500–$2,550 resistance zone.
However, despite the price recovery, several market indicators suggest that a sustained bullish reversal is not yet confirmed.
Declining exchange reserves, reduced trading activity, and weaker derivatives demand present a mixed outlook for Ethereum’s next major move.
Ethereum Price Rebounds After Sharp Market Decline
The latest Ethereum price rebound followed a difficult period for the cryptocurrency market.
Ethereum came under significant selling pressure after stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation data raised concerns about additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases.
The cryptocurrency briefly dropped below $2,350 before buyers stepped in around the $2,320–$2,325 support area.
According to CoinGecko data cited in the October 16 report, Ethereum was trading near $2,460, with a market capitalization of approximately $300.6 billion and daily trading volume of $14.38 billion.
During the preceding 24 hours, ETH traded between $2,324.97 and $2,463.31.
The recovery helped Ethereum regain much of its recent losses and brought prices back toward the psychologically important $2,500 level.
Crypto analyst Alex Marzell identified $2,324 as the point where the latest selling pressure began to ease.
From that level, Ethereum gained approximately 6% over nine hours and moved above $2,420.
Marzell noted that buyers continued entering the market during subsequent pullbacks, suggesting renewed short-term interest.
However, he also warned that losing support at $2,420 could trigger another decline toward $2,380.
Ethereum Faces Major Resistance at $2,500–$2,550
Following the rebound, analysts identified the $2,500–$2,550 range as Ethereum’s next important price barrier.
The $2,500 level represents an immediate resistance zone, while $2,550 could become a decisive threshold for a stronger recovery.
Crypto analyst Ted Pillows highlighted $2,550 as an important level after Ethereum bounced from support near $2,350.
According to his assessment, ETH could continue climbing if buyers maintain momentum.
However, a weekly close above $2,550 would provide stronger evidence that the recent market bottom may have formed.
If Ethereum successfully breaks through that resistance and maintains its position, attention could shift toward higher price targets.
Some analysts have identified $2,600 as the next potential resistance level, followed by the $2,750–$2,800 area.
A stronger recovery could eventually bring $3,000 back into focus, although such a move would require additional buying pressure and improved market conditions.
On the downside, failure to maintain support could expose Ethereum to another correction.
The $2,400 level remains an important short-term area to watch, followed by potential support between $2,300 and $2,200.
Technical Indicators Suggest Ethereum Recovery Remains Uncertain
Despite Ethereum’s recent price gains, technical indicators have not yet confirmed a complete bullish reversal.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator, commonly known as MACD, remained in negative territory during the October 16 observation.
The MACD line stood at approximately -35.5, while the signal line was around -8.6.
The histogram registered -26.9, suggesting that downward momentum had not fully disappeared.
A bullish MACD crossover would provide additional evidence that momentum is shifting in favor of buyers.
Meanwhile, Ethereum’s Relative Strength Index stood at approximately 41.93.
The RSI remained below the neutral 50 level but had not entered traditionally oversold territory.
This suggests that although buying activity has improved, the broader market has not yet established strong bullish momentum.
For traders, these readings indicate that the latest recovery may still face resistance before developing into a more sustained upward trend.
Binance Ethereum Reserves Drop by 430,000 ETH
One of the most closely watched developments involves the decline in Ethereum reserves held on Binance.
According to CryptoQuant analyst Amr Taha, Binance’s Ethereum reserves decreased by approximately 430,000 ETH between August 25 and October 16, 2026.
During this period, the exchange’s tracked ETH holdings fell from about 3.90 million tokens to 3.47 million.
Using the analyst’s reference price of $2,437.30, the decline represented approximately $1.05 billion in Ethereum.
The reduction amounted to roughly 11% of the exchange’s reported ETH reserves.
Falling exchange reserves can sometimes be interpreted as a positive signal because fewer coins may be immediately available for trading.
Investors may transfer cryptocurrencies from exchanges into private wallets or custody services when they intend to hold them for longer periods.
However, exchange withdrawals do not automatically prove long-term accumulation.
Assets may also move between exchanges, institutional custodians, and other blockchain addresses.
Therefore, while declining Ethereum reserves could reduce immediately available exchange supply, they do not guarantee future price increases.
Ethereum Trading Volume Falls More Than 53%
Alongside the decline in exchange reserves, CryptoQuant data revealed a substantial reduction in Ethereum spot trading activity.
According to the analyst’s findings, the seven-day average ETH spot trading volume across centralized exchanges dropped from approximately $6.73 billion on August 25 to $3.125 billion on October 15.
That represents a decline of about 53.6%.
Trading activity weakened both on Binance and across other centralized exchanges.
Binance’s average ETH spot volume fell from approximately $1.75 billion to $825 million.
Meanwhile, average volume across other exchanges declined from $4.98 billion to $2.30 billion.
The data suggest that market participation has weakened significantly over the observation period.
Lower trading volume can make price movements more difficult to interpret.
For example, Ethereum may recover during a period of limited selling pressure without attracting enough fresh buying demand to sustain the rally.
A stronger increase in trading volume would help support the case for a more convincing market recovery.
Ethereum Liquidations Reveal Significant Short-Side Exposure
Ethereum’s recent volatility has also affected traders using leveraged positions.
Following the inflation-driven selloff, approximately $106 million in leveraged Ethereum long positions were liquidated on Binance within one hour, according to the report.
CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost described the event as the exchange’s largest hourly Ethereum long liquidation in six months.
Liquidations occur when leveraged positions are forcibly closed because traders can no longer maintain the required margin.
These events can intensify market volatility, particularly during sudden price declines.
Separate liquidation heatmap data showed approximately $546 million in estimated short-position liquidation exposure above Ethereum’s prevailing market price.
By comparison, estimated long-position liquidation clusters below the market totaled around $187 million.
The short-side exposure was therefore approximately 2.9 times larger than the long-side amount.
However, these figures represent estimated positions vulnerable to liquidation at certain price levels, not funds that have already been liquidated.
If Ethereum rises sharply through major short liquidation zones, forced position closures could potentially accelerate the upward movement.
Nevertheless, liquidation maps alone cannot predict future price direction.
Ethereum Open Interest Declines as Leverage Cools
Additional derivatives market data suggest that speculative activity has weakened following Ethereum’s recent decline.
CryptoQuant contributor CryptoOnchain reported that Binance Ethereum open interest fell approximately 4.7% over 30 days to around $6.1 billion.
Open interest measures the value of outstanding derivatives contracts that have not yet been closed or settled.
A decline can indicate that traders are reducing exposure or closing leveraged positions.
During the same observation period, long liquidations increased by 47%, while funding rates remained close to zero.
The analyst interpreted these developments as evidence that excessive leverage had been reduced.
Although lower leverage can help stabilize markets, the data also suggest that fresh demand has not yet returned strongly.
Binance USDT reserves reportedly declined 2.3%, while stablecoin net flows were approximately negative $175 million.
This indicates that additional stablecoin liquidity was not flowing into the exchange during the measured period.
The Coinbase Premium indicator also remained negative at -0.11, suggesting weaker demand on Coinbase relative to the comparison market.
Together, these indicators present a cautious outlook for Ethereum’s recovery.
Ethereum Network Activity Remains Subdued
Ethereum’s blockchain activity also showed signs of weakness in the reported data.
According to CryptoOnchain, Ethereum transaction counts declined by approximately 4% during the observation period.
Meanwhile, burned transaction fees dropped by around 58%.
Lower transaction-related fee burning may indicate reduced demand for certain types of network activity.
However, transaction and fee metrics can also be influenced by changes in network usage patterns, transaction costs, and activity across Ethereum’s broader ecosystem.
Despite weaker activity, Ethereum staking remained relatively strong.
The analyst reported a staking rate of approximately 36.1%, placing it near the 98.6th historical percentile.
Staking involves committing eligible ETH to help secure Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network in exchange for potential rewards.
Higher staking participation can reflect continued interest in network validation and long-term participation.
However, strong staking figures do not necessarily translate into immediate spot market buying pressure.
Overall, CryptoOnchain maintained a neutral assessment of Ethereum’s on-chain conditions.
BitMine Holds More Than 6 Million Ethereum
Institutional Ethereum holdings remain another important factor in the market.
BitMine Immersion Technologies, chaired by Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee, reported holding 6,028,946 ETH following an additional purchase of 12,532 tokens on October 12.
According to the company’s reported figures, its Ethereum treasury represented approximately 4.9% of the cryptocurrency’s circulating supply.
BitMine has pursued a strategy of accumulating around 5% of Ethereum’s total supply.
The company has also committed a substantial portion of its holdings to staking.
Earlier disclosures indicated that approximately 5,067,309 ETH were staked as of October 4.
BitMine’s large holdings highlight the growing role that corporate treasury strategies can play in Ethereum’s market.
During an October 7 investor presentation, Lee discussed the company’s progress toward its accumulation target.
He estimated that BitMine needed approximately another 100,000 ETH to reach its intended allocation at that time.
Lee subsequently discussed the possibility of ending additional ETH purchases once the company achieves its 5% target.
However, corporate accumulation strategies remain separate from broader market indicators such as exchange reserves, derivatives positioning, and spot trading demand.
Can Ethereum Break Above $2,550?
Ethereum’s ability to reclaim $2,550 could become one of the most important short-term developments for traders.
The latest rebound suggests that buyers remain active near the $2,320–$2,350 support region.
However, resistance near $2,500 and $2,550 could determine whether the recovery develops further.
<text weight=”medium”>Key Ethereum price levels to watch:</text>
| Price Level | Market Significance |
|---|---|
| $2,200–$2,300 | Lower potential support zone |
| $2,350 | Recent buying support area |
| $2,400–$2,420 | Important short-term support |
| $2,500 | Immediate resistance |
| $2,550 | Major breakout threshold |
| $2,600 | Potential upside target |
| $2,750–$2,800 | Higher resistance zone |
| $3,000 | Possible longer-term recovery target |
A sustained move above $2,550, particularly with stronger trading volume, could improve confidence in Ethereum’s recovery.
On the other hand, failure to break resistance could lead to renewed selling pressure and another test of lower support levels.
Investors will also be watching whether stablecoin liquidity returns to exchanges and whether spot demand strengthens.
These developments could help determine whether Ethereum’s current rebound has enough support to continue.
Final Thoughts
The recent Ethereum price rebound has provided some relief following a sharp cryptocurrency market correction.
ETH recovered more than 4% to trade near $2,462, while buyers defended support around $2,325.
Declining Binance reserves and BitMine’s substantial corporate holdings offer potentially supportive signals.
However, falling spot trading volume, reduced derivatives activity, and weak liquidity indicators suggest that the recovery remains uncertain.
Ethereum’s next major test will be whether buyers can push prices above the important $2,500–$2,550 resistance zone.
A confirmed breakout could improve the bullish outlook, while another rejection may increase the likelihood of a renewed correction.
For now, Ethereum remains at an important technical level, with its next direction likely to depend on trading activity, liquidity conditions, and broader cryptocurrency market sentiment.
