German telecom operator 1&1 has announced plans to acquire Versatel for €1.3 billion, marking a major step in consolidating its fixed-line and mobile infrastructure. The acquisition will significantly expand 1&1’s fiber network footprint and strengthen its position as Germany’s fourth facilities-based mobile provider.
A Strategic Move to Control Key Fiber and Backhaul Infrastructure
Under the agreement, 1&1 will take over all of Versatel’s assets and liabilities, including its extensive fiber network, mobile backhaul systems, and B2B connectivity services. The deal also includes a €950 million loan that remains on Versatel’s books but is backed by a 1&1 guarantee meaning the company will not incur immediate cash outflows.
The final purchase price may be revised by up to €300 million depending on Versatel’s financial performance between 2027 and 2029, with settlement set for 2030.
Versatel’s Fiber Network Sees Impressive Expansion
Since United Internet fully acquired Versatel in 2014, the company has more than doubled the reach of its fiber network:
- Expanded from 37,000 km to 67,000 km
- Now active in 350 cities, up from 226
- Connects over 27,700 sites
- Serves institutional clients and telecom operators
This makes Versatel one of Germany’s most significant fiber providers, offering 1&1 a robust foundation to expand both consumer and enterprise services.
Boosting 1&1’s Mobile Strategy Through Fixed-Line Integration
The acquisition comes at a pivotal moment for 1&1. The company recently completed the migration of 12 million customers onto its new Open RAN mobile network. Aligning that mobile infrastructure with Versatel’s fiber backbone is expected to increase efficiency, improve performance, and enhance long-term competitiveness.
Industry analysts say control over both fixed and mobile assets strengthens 1&1’s ability to challenge established players in Germany’s rapidly expanding fiber landscape a sector that has historically lagged behind other European markets but is now accelerating.
