Ethereum is back in the spotlight, trading at $3,908 at the time of writing up 3.2% in the past 24 hours and a massive 61% over the last 30 days. With momentum clearly on its side, ETH looks poised to challenge the psychological $4,000 level, and institutional players are fueling the fire.
SharpLink Buys 77K ETH Now Holds Over $1.6 Billion Worth
One of the key drivers behind this surge? SharpLink, a gaming and data firm, just scooped up 77,210 ETH (around $295 million) on July 28, pushing its total ETH holdings to a jaw-dropping 438,017 ETH valued at about $1.69 billion.
Most of that stash is staked across platforms like Figment and Hoppers DApp, showing SharpLink is playing the long game. The company is funding these buys through a massive equity push expanding its equity target from $1 billion to $6 billion. They’ve already raised $721 million, with big names like Consensys, Pantera, ParaFi, and Electric Capital backing the effort.
With Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin as chairman and ex-BlackRock strategist Joseph Chalom as co-CEO, SharpLink’s ETH strategy is starting to look more like a master plan than a moonshot. If they hit their goal, they’d be holding 1 million ETH, roughly 1% of the total ETH supply enough to cement their spot as a heavyweight institutional holder.
Right now, they’re the second-largest ETH holder, trailing only Bitmine Immersion Tech with 566,000 ETH.
Derivatives, Volume, and Open Interest Surge
Ethereum’s 24-hour trading volume exploded to $32.95 billion, up 47.3% from the previous day. According to CoinGlass, open interest jumped 7.72% to $59.94 billion, while derivatives volume climbed a staggering 61.44% to $89.16 billion signaling traders are bracing for more action.
ETH futures open interest has now surpassed $60 billion, marking a new all-time high. All signs point to growing investor confidence and rising speculative interest.
Technical Outlook: Bullish, but Overheated?
Ethereum’s chart is painting a bullish picture. The price remains well above the 20-day simple moving average (SMA) at $3,432, which now serves as a short-term support. The Bollinger Bands are widening a classic sign of incoming volatility and ETH is hugging the upper band, hinting at continued upward momentum.
However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 82.89, placing ETH firmly in overbought territory. While that could mean a short-term pullback or consolidation, the RSI hasn’t turned downward yet suggesting there’s still juice left in this rally.
As long as ETH stays above the $3,600 support, the uptrend remains intact. A decisive break above $4,000 could unlock the next target at $4,168. On the flip side, if ETH dips below the 20-day SMA, we could see a retracement toward $3,250.
Bottom Line
Ethereum is firing on all cylinders. Institutional interest is rising fast, retail momentum is strong, and the charts are leaning bullish even if a little overheated in the short term. Whether or not we see $4,000 breached in the coming days, one thing is clear: Ethereum isn’t just riding a wave it may be building a new one altogether.
