Blockchain.com has received a full Virtual Asset Service Provider custody licence from the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, allowing the crypto company to expand its regulated custody, staking and exchange services in the jurisdiction.
The definitive approval replaces the conditional licence granted in December 2025. Blockchain.com said it completed all outstanding regulatory requirements before receiving final authorization on July 22, 2026.
The Cayman licence adds to the company’s recent regulatory progress in Europe and the United Kingdom as it works to establish a stronger presence across major international markets.
CIMA Grants Blockchain.com Definitive Approval
The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority has granted Blockchain.com a full VASP custody services licence through the company’s local subsidiary.
Blockchain.com had operated under a VASP registration in the Cayman Islands since May 2022. In December 2025, CIMA issued conditional approval for the expanded custody licence, subject to the completion of additional regulatory requirements.
The company said it successfully met those conditions before receiving the definitive licence in July.
Moving from conditional approval to full authorization gives Blockchain.com a clearer regulatory foundation for offering digital asset services to retail and institutional customers in the Cayman Islands.
What the Cayman VASP Licence Allows
The licence authorizes Blockchain.com to provide regulated digital asset custody services in the jurisdiction.
Crypto custody involves securely storing and managing digital assets on behalf of individuals, companies and institutional investors. Professional custody providers typically use security systems such as multisignature authorization, restricted access controls, offline storage and transaction-monitoring tools.
In addition to custody, Blockchain.com can provide exchanges between virtual assets and traditional currencies.
The company can also support exchanges between different convertible virtual assets, allowing eligible customers to trade one cryptocurrency for another under the regulated Cayman framework.
Blockchain.com Expands Institutional Custody Services
Blockchain.com identified institutional custody as one of the main services supported by the new licence.
Institutional investors generally require stronger security, governance and compliance procedures than individual crypto users. Companies managing large digital asset portfolios may also need detailed transaction records, internal approval systems and clearly defined asset-management responsibilities.
A regulated custody service can help organizations meet these requirements while reducing some of the operational risks associated with independently managing private keys.
The Cayman approval allows Blockchain.com to offer these services through a fully licensed local entity.
Licence Also Supports Institutional Staking
The regulatory approval extends beyond cryptocurrency storage and trading.
Blockchain.com said the licence supports institutional staking infrastructure, allowing organizations to participate in blockchain validation and potentially earn rewards on eligible digital assets.
Staking is used by proof-of-stake networks to help confirm transactions and secure the blockchain. Participants lock or delegate tokens and may receive rewards in exchange for supporting network operations.
Institutional staking often requires more advanced infrastructure because organizations must manage operational security, withdrawal rules, validator performance and regulatory responsibilities.
Blockchain.com can now provide these services through its regulated Cayman operations.
Retail Staking Included in the Regulated Framework
Eligible retail customers may also gain access to staking services under the licence.
Retail staking allows individual users to earn rewards from supported proof-of-stake assets without operating their own validator infrastructure.
The service can simplify participation, but staking still involves risks. Rewards are not guaranteed, token prices can decline and some networks may impose lock-up periods or penalties for validator failures.
Offering the product within a licensed structure may provide customers with clearer disclosures, compliance checks and operational standards than unregulated staking services.
Availability will still depend on customer eligibility, supported assets and local requirements.
Approval Builds on MiCA and FCA Progress
The Cayman licence follows other significant regulatory developments for Blockchain.com.
The company recently secured authorization under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. MiCA establishes common rules for digital asset businesses operating across participating European markets.
Blockchain.com also completed registration with the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority.
These approvals expand the company’s ability to provide regulated services in several important jurisdictions while responding to the growing demand for stronger oversight of cryptocurrency businesses.
Co-CEO Lane Kasselman said the Cayman licence builds on the company’s recent regulatory momentum in Europe and the United Kingdom.
Blockchain.com Emphasizes Regulatory Compliance
Kasselman said effective regulation is important for the long-term growth of the digital asset industry.
Blockchain.com believes that obtaining licences in multiple jurisdictions will strengthen its ability to serve customers while meeting local compliance and investor-protection requirements.
Crypto companies are facing increasing pressure to demonstrate that they maintain proper controls for custody, anti-money laundering compliance, customer verification and transaction monitoring.
Regulatory approvals do not remove every risk connected to a platform. However, they show that a company has completed a formal review process and agreed to operate under the supervision of the relevant authority.
Company Strengthens Its Cayman Presence
Blockchain.com is also expanding its physical and operational presence in the Cayman Islands.
In June, the company announced a partnership with TechCayman, an organization that assists international technology companies in establishing local operations.
The partnership will support Blockchain.com as it hires its first employee in the jurisdiction.
TechCayman will provide sponsorship, operational assistance and access to its local business network.
The planned hire suggests that Blockchain.com intends to maintain an active local presence rather than using the Cayman Islands only as a licensing location.
Local Hiring Supports Long-Term Expansion
Establishing a permanent team can help Blockchain.com manage its regulatory responsibilities and relationships with local institutions.
A local employee may support compliance operations, business development and coordination with service providers and regulatory authorities.
Digital asset regulators increasingly expect licensed companies to demonstrate meaningful operational substance within the jurisdictions where they are authorized.
This may include local employees, governance systems, compliance personnel and clearly documented decision-making processes.
Blockchain.com’s partnership with TechCayman is intended to help the company develop that presence as its regulated services expand.
Cayman Islands Remains an Important Crypto Jurisdiction
The Cayman Islands has become an important location for cryptocurrency funds, blockchain businesses and digital asset service providers.
Its VASP framework establishes licensing and registration requirements for companies offering services such as custody, trading, exchange and asset transfers.
Businesses seeking approval must generally demonstrate appropriate governance, cybersecurity, compliance and risk-management procedures.
For crypto companies, operating from the Cayman Islands can provide access to an international financial centre with experience in investment funds and cross-border financial services.
At the same time, firms must comply with CIMA’s regulatory and reporting requirements.
Blockchain.com Reports More Than $1.1 Trillion in Transactions
Founded in 2011, Blockchain.com is one of the longest-operating companies in the cryptocurrency industry.
The business began with blockchain data and wallet services before expanding into trading, institutional products and other digital asset infrastructure.
Blockchain.com said it has processed more than $1.1 trillion in transactions and serves over 43 million verified users worldwide.
Its large customer base gives the company a significant position in both retail and institutional crypto markets.
The Cayman licence could support further growth by allowing Blockchain.com to offer a wider set of regulated services from the jurisdiction.
Company Has Filed Confidentially for a U.S. IPO
Blockchain.com’s regulatory expansion comes as the company considers a possible public listing in the United States.
In May 2026, it confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a potential initial public offering.
A confidential filing allows a company to begin the SEC review process without immediately disclosing all details to the public.
Blockchain.com did not reveal the proposed size, share price or valuation of the potential offering.
The company said any IPO would depend on the completion of the SEC review and broader market conditions.
Public Listing Plans Remain Uncertain
Submitting a draft registration statement does not guarantee that Blockchain.com will proceed with an IPO.
Companies may delay or cancel public listings due to market volatility, regulatory concerns or changes in their financial performance.
A successful listing would place Blockchain.com among a growing group of publicly traded or publicly listed digital asset businesses.
It could also give investors greater access to information about the company’s revenue, costs, risks and business strategy.
The Cayman, European and UK regulatory approvals may strengthen Blockchain.com’s position as it prepares for increased scrutiny connected to a possible public offering.
Blockchain.com Adds Perpetual Futures to DeFi Wallet
The company has also expanded the trading features available through its non-custodial wallet.
In April, Blockchain.com introduced perpetual futures trading through an integration with Hyperliquid.
The service allows eligible users to access more than 190 cryptocurrency markets with leverage of up to 40 times.
Unlike a traditional centralized exchange account, users can trade while maintaining control over their private keys through Blockchain.com’s DeFi wallet.
This structure combines non-custodial wallet access with leveraged trading infrastructure supplied through a decentralized platform.
Leveraged Trading Carries Significant Risk
Perpetual futures allow traders to speculate on cryptocurrency prices without an expiry date.
While leverage can increase potential profits, it can also rapidly magnify losses. A relatively small market move may liquidate a highly leveraged position and cause a trader to lose most or all of the collateral committed to the trade.
Adding the feature expands Blockchain.com’s product range, but it also introduces risks that differ significantly from standard custody or spot-market services.
The company has said it eventually intends to add access to foreign exchange, stock and commodity markets through the platform.
Any expansion into those markets would likely depend on technical development, regulations and user eligibility.
Geographic Expansion Continues in Africa
Blockchain.com has also expanded its retail business in African markets.
In March, the company launched retail operations in Ghana after reporting strong growth among local users.
It has also described Nigeria as one of its fastest-growing markets after establishing local operations in Lagos.
African markets have become increasingly important for cryptocurrency adoption because digital assets may provide alternatives for cross-border payments, savings, remittances and access to global markets.
However, companies operating in the region must navigate different regulatory rules, currency controls and consumer-protection requirements.
Blockchain.com’s expansion suggests that the company sees long-term demand for crypto services across the continent.
Regulatory Licences Become More Important
The global cryptocurrency industry is entering a period of greater regulatory oversight.
Governments are introducing licensing requirements for exchanges, custodians, stablecoin issuers and other service providers.
For companies such as Blockchain.com, securing approvals in several jurisdictions can reduce regulatory uncertainty and help attract institutional customers.
Banks, asset managers and corporate investors are often unwilling to work with platforms that lack clear legal authorization.
A regulated operating structure can therefore become an important competitive advantage as traditional finance increases its involvement in digital assets.
Full Approval Marks a Key Milestone
Blockchain.com’s definitive Cayman VASP licence completes a process that began with its initial registration in 2022 and conditional approval in December 2025.
The company can now offer regulated custody, staking and virtual asset exchange services through its Cayman subsidiary.
Its partnership with TechCayman and plan to hire a local employee indicate that Blockchain.com is also building a more permanent operational presence in the jurisdiction.
Together with its MiCA approval and FCA registration, the licence strengthens the company’s international regulatory network.
As Blockchain.com considers a potential U.S. public listing and continues expanding its retail and institutional products, regulatory compliance is likely to remain a central part of its growth strategy.
