Japanese investment firm Metaplanet Inc. has further strengthened its Bitcoin treasury with the acquisition of an additional 156 BTC, bringing its total holdings to 2,391 BTC. The latest purchase was disclosed in an official announcement on March 3, 2025.
According to Metaplanet, the newly acquired Bitcoin was purchased at an average price of 12.95 million yen ($85,483) per BTC, amounting to a total expenditure of 2.021 billion yen ($13.34 million). This move aligns with the company’s ongoing strategy of accumulating Bitcoin as a core treasury asset.
Aggressive Bitcoin Accumulation Strategy
Since formally incorporating Bitcoin into its business plan in July 2024, Metaplanet has rapidly expanded its holdings, growing from 161 BTC to its current 2,391 BTC. This rapid accumulation has been fueled by strategic capital market operations, including bond issuances and stock purchase rights.
The company has been actively raising capital to fund its Bitcoin acquisitions. On February 2025, Metaplanet issued its 6th Series of Ordinary Bonds to EVO FUND, raising 4 billion yen ($26.4 million). These were zero-coupon bonds, meaning they carried no interest payments. Metaplanet successfully repaid 2 billion yen ($13.2 million) of these bonds ahead of schedule by February 19 and cleared the remaining amount by February 21. Shortly after, on February 27, the company issued a fresh 2 billion yen ($13.2 million) bond under its 7th Series of Ordinary Bonds, set to mature on August 26, 2025.
BTC Yield and Financial Performance
Metaplanet also disclosed its BTC Yield, a key metric that evaluates Bitcoin accumulation relative to share dilution. The company reported an impressive 309.8% yield in Q4 2024. For the current period, from January 1 to March 3, the BTC yield stands at 31.8%, reflecting the firm’s continued focus on maximizing Bitcoin holdings while maintaining a sustainable funding strategy.
Investment in Bitcoin Surpasses $196 Million
As of March 3, 2025, Metaplanet has invested a total of 29.83 billion yen ($196.87 million) in Bitcoin, with an average purchase price of 12.47 million yen ($82,322) per BTC. The firm’s aggressive approach to Bitcoin accumulation underscores its confidence in the digital asset as a long-term store of value. With its ongoing capital-raising initiatives and commitment to Bitcoin as a treasury asset, Metaplanet continues to position itself as a key institutional player in the Bitcoin market. As the company further expands its holdings, market observers will closely monitor how this strategy influences its financial performance
