Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed a bold vision for the network’s future, announcing plans to scale Ethereum’s Layer 1 throughput by approximately tenfold within the next year. The statement was made during ETHGlobal Prague, where Buterin addressed the platform’s long-term scalability and decentralization goals.
“Scale L1 About 10x” – A Measured Roadmap
When asked about Ethereum’s scaling trajectory, Buterin explained:
“We should scale L1 about 10x over the next year and a bit.”
This projected increase would mark one of the most substantial performance upgrades in Ethereum’s history, aiming to create a more efficient base layer that can better support the rising demand from Layer 2 solutions, decentralized applications, and DeFi ecosystems.
Buterin stressed that the upgrade will be approached cautiously, with an emphasis on “scaling safely.” This balance, he said, is necessary to avoid compromising Ethereum’s core principle of decentralization while enabling more robust performance.
A Pause After Progress
Notably, Buterin revealed that the ambitious scaling upgrade will be followed by a strategic pause. This “breather” period will serve as a checkpoint to evaluate the effects of the changes and maintain Ethereum’s decentralization integrity.
“At that point, it will be a good time to take a breather and have a period to verify that we are actually doing okay on decentralization properties,” he added.
This break will also give Ethereum developers time to tie up loose ends, refine infrastructure, and gather valuable feedback from the broader ecosystem before moving forward with additional changes.
Bigger Blocks, Better Layer 2s
In a separate conversation with Marek Olszewski, CTO and co-founder of cLabs, Buterin elaborated on the role of block size expansion in enhancing scalability.
“Increasing block sizes on Layer 1 creates more space and makes it easier for Layer 2 solutions to operate securely and efficiently,” Buterin noted.
This approach aligns with Ethereum’s ongoing modular roadmap, where Layer 1 focuses on security and data availability, while Layer 2 handles execution and high-throughput demands.
Market Reaction and Broader Context
Ethereum’s native token (ETH) reacted with minimal volatility, posting a minor 0.03% gain in the last 24 hours to trade just above $2,500. Despite the short-term calm, ETH is still down nearly 10% from its monthly high, as market participants weigh macro trends and upcoming network upgrades.
Buterin’s remarks come amid growing industry discourse about the long-term sustainability and efficiency of Layer 1 blockchains, particularly as more decentralized applications push against current throughput limits.
