Justin Sun has taken a more forceful stance in the ongoing $456 million TrueUSD (TUSD) reserve controversy, using a rare in-person press briefing in Hong Kong to outline new claims and defend his role in stabilizing the troubled stablecoin.
The Nov. 27 event, titled “Truth Unveiled, Justice Revealed,” marked Sun’s most direct public response yet as legal disputes intensify across Hong Kong and Dubai.
Sun Expands Claims on Misused TUSD Reserves
During the briefing, Sun accused TUSD’s former custodial partners of diverting reserves into unauthorized, high-risk investments between 2021 and 2022. He specifically named First Digital Trust and Aria Commodities, alleging they exploited weaknesses in Hong Kong’s trust oversight framework.
According to Sun, the funds were steered into commodity financing and mining ventures that became impossible to unwind when TUSD faced heavy redemption pressure earlier this year. This liquidity crunch, he said, forced him to inject nearly $500 million in emergency support to maintain the stablecoin’s peg.
Sun described Dubai’s recent global asset freeze ordered by the DIFC Court as a key milestone, saying it strengthens efforts to recover funds he believes were wrongfully moved out of custodial structures.
He also urged Hong Kong regulators to tighten supervision of trust service providers, arguing that the TUSD case highlights the need for internationally coordinated enforcement in financial custody systems.
How the $456M Dispute Emerged
The conflict centers on a $456 million shortfall discovered in TUSD’s reserves at the start of 2025. Techteryx the firm behind TrueUSD accused its custodians of channeling funds into arrangements that violated the trust agreement, ultimately placing the money under the control of Aria Commodities, tied to financier Matthew William Brittain.
When market volatility spiked, the positions tied to these ventures couldn’t be liquidated quickly enough, posing an immediate threat to the stablecoin’s peg. Techteryx launched legal action in Hong Kong and Dubai to regain access to the missing funds.
During this turmoil, Sun stepped in with an emergency capital infusion to stabilize TUSD and prevent further panic.
By mid-October, Dubai’s financial court found enough evidence to believe the assets could be moved or concealed, ordering an indefinite global freeze a decision that was later reaffirmed.
What Comes Next
TUSD has maintained its peg since Sun’s intervention, but regulatory and legal pressures are intensifying on all sides. Courts in Hong Kong and Dubai are now working to determine who ultimately owns the diverted reserves and whether custodians acted in violation of their obligations.
With Sun now taking a more public leadership role in the dispute, the stakes surrounding TUSD’s future and the broader trust oversight landscape in Hong Kong continue to rise.
