Bitwise’s Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, has voiced strong confidence in Solana (SOL), comparing its long-term potential to Bitcoin’s early growth trajectory. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Hougan outlined why he believes Solana represents one of the most promising bets in the crypto market today one that offers what he calls “two ways to win.”
‘Two Ways to Win’ The Dual-Bet Investment Thesis
Hougan explained that the most successful crypto investments historically have two simultaneous growth drivers:
- Overall market expansion, and
- A project’s ability to increase its share within that growing market.
He illustrated this with Bitcoin, which benefits from both the global store-of-value market expanding and Bitcoin itself capturing more dominance within that sector.
Applying the same framework, Hougan argued that Solana fits this model perfectly poised to benefit from both the rapid expansion of the stablecoin and tokenization infrastructure sector and Solana’s rising dominance within it.
“For Solana, there are two ways to win the sector can grow, and Solana’s market share can grow alongside it,” Hougan wrote.
Solana’s Market Position and Growth Potential
According to Hougan, Solana is currently one of the strongest Layer-1 blockchain contenders, competing alongside Ethereum, BNB Chain, and TRON in a combined market segment valued at more than $768 billion.
He noted that Solana’s current market share stands at around 14%, leaving significant room for upside if the overall blockchain and tokenization markets continue to expand.
While Ethereum remains the leader in tokenization and DeFi infrastructure, Hougan emphasized that Solana’s unique advantages including faster transaction speeds, a thriving developer ecosystem, and growing institutional adoption are helping it close the gap quickly.
One example he highlighted was Western Union’s recent decision to build a stablecoin initiative on Solana, a sign that major traditional companies are beginning to recognize the chain’s scalability and technical edge.
Institutional Confidence and ETF Momentum
Hougan’s bullish stance comes at a time of rising institutional interest in Solana. Earlier this month, Bitwise launched the first U.S. spot Solana ETF, which recorded $69.45 million in first-day inflows one of the strongest debuts among altcoin ETFs to date.
The successful launch has reinforced Solana’s growing credibility in institutional circles, marking a turning point for a project once dismissed as too volatile or experimental.
“If I’m right, the combination of a growing market and a growing market share will be explosive for Solana just as it was for Bitcoin,” Hougan stated confidently.
Solana vs. Bitcoin: A Long Climb Ahead
Despite Hougan’s optimism, Solana still has a long road ahead before approaching Bitcoin’s scale.
While Bitcoin commands a market capitalization of roughly $2.19 trillion, Solana’s sits at around $102 billion nearly 2000% smaller.
At the time of writing, SOL trades just below $190, locked in a month-long consolidation phase as it attempts to break free from its short-term downtrend.
A Bullish Outlook Amid a Maturing Market
Hougan remains bullish not only on Solana but also on Ethereum, emphasizing that both ecosystems can thrive as institutional adoption deepens. However, he believes Solana’s high-speed architecture and user-focused ecosystem give it a unique edge to capture a larger slice of the blockchain economy.
His comparison to Bitcoin’s early trajectory underscores growing confidence that Solana could evolve from a fast-rising altcoin into one of the defining assets of the next crypto cycle.
