Step App has announced that it will permanently shut down its services on Aug. 21, 2026, ending the move-to-earn project’s four-year run.
The team has advised users to unstake locked tokens, withdraw supported assets and manage any exchange positions before the deadline. Step App did not provide a financial, regulatory or technical explanation for the closure.
The project also has not announced a buyer, successor platform, token migration or compensation plan, making asset access the immediate priority for users.
Step App Will Close All Services on Aug. 21
Step App confirmed the shutdown in an official statement published on Aug. 5.
The project said all services would wind down globally on Aug. 21, giving users approximately two weeks to manage their accounts and token holdings.
Users with staked or locked assets were instructed to unstake them before access ends. Those holding FITFI or KCAL on exchanges should also review the separate trading and withdrawal deadlines announced by each platform.
The shutdown appears to be a complete closure rather than a transition to another application or blockchain product.
Step App has not announced:
- A replacement platform
- A token swap
- A business sale
- A restructuring process
- A continuation of selected services
- Compensation for token holders
Unless the team publishes additional instructions, users should assume that access to key services may become unavailable after Aug. 21.
No Reason Given for the Closure
Step App did not explain why it decided to stop operating.
The statement did not identify declining revenue, weak user activity, regulatory pressure, technical problems or funding challenges as the cause.
Without further information, it is unclear whether the shutdown was driven by business conditions, operational costs or reduced demand for move-to-earn applications.
The project described the decision as a final operational wind-down and thanked its community for participating during its four years of activity.
Step App said the application recorded more than one million downloads and tracked billions of steps. Those figures were provided by the company and were not independently audited.
Users Should Unstake Tokens Before the Deadline
The most urgent step for users is to review any locked or staked assets associated with Step App.
The project specifically told users to unstake tokens before the Aug. 21 shutdown.
Users should access the application only through verified Step App websites, social media accounts or official application links. Shutdown announcements often create opportunities for scammers to publish fake migration websites or fraudulent token-claim pages.
Before completing a transfer, users should confirm:
- The correct token contract
- The destination blockchain
- The receiving wallet address
- Whether the receiving exchange supports that network
- Any minimum deposit or withdrawal requirements
- The project’s official deadline
Sending tokens over an unsupported blockchain could result in delayed access or permanent loss.
Several Services Have an Uncertain Future
Step App did not clearly explain which features, if any, will remain accessible after Aug. 21.
The announcement did not confirm the future availability of:
- Step App wallets
- The NFT marketplace
- Step Exchange
- The blockchain bridge
- Token claims
- Account records
- Activity data exports
- Step Network infrastructure
Because the status of these products remains uncertain, users should complete necessary actions before the project deadline rather than assuming limited access will continue afterward.
Those who need transaction histories or account records may also want to save available information before services close.
How Step App’s Move-to-Earn System Worked
Step App combined fitness tracking with blockchain-based rewards.
Users could earn the KCAL in-game token by completing physical activities such as walking and running. KCAL was used within the platform’s fitness and rewards ecosystem.
FITFI served as the project’s wider utility and governance token. It was used for functions including:
- Governance participation
- Network fees
- Staking
- Marketplace activity
- Ecosystem incentives
The project also featured SNEAK NFTs, which were connected to its move-to-earn mechanics.
Step App operated across Step Network and Avalanche, with separate token contracts available for supported networks.
This makes network verification especially important when users move tokens before the shutdown.
Usain Bolt Promoted the Project in 2022
Step App gained wider attention in 2022 when Olympic champion Usain Bolt introduced the platform in Japan as its global ambassador.
The project marketed itself as a fitness application that rewarded users for physical activity through cryptocurrency and NFTs.
Move-to-earn projects became popular during the broader blockchain gaming and NFT expansion of 2021 and 2022.
These platforms attempted to encourage exercise by rewarding users with digital tokens. However, many struggled to maintain sustainable token economies after initial interest declined.
Step App’s shutdown now marks the end of one of the sector’s better-known fitness-focused applications.
Bithumb Will Stop FITFI Trading on Aug. 18
Exchange support for FITFI had already started shrinking before Step App announced its closure.
South Korean exchange Bithumb said it would end FITFI trading at 3:00 p.m. Korea Standard Time on Aug. 18.
The exchange said the issues behind the token’s earlier warning designation had not been resolved.
Bithumb had placed FITFI on its warning list in April after the token’s market capitalization and trading activity fell below the exchange’s policy thresholds.
Although FITFI trading will stop on Aug. 18, Bithumb users will have until Sept. 18 to withdraw their tokens, according to the exchange’s announced schedule.
The Bithumb deadlines are separate from Step App’s Aug. 21 service shutdown.
KuCoin and Bybit Also Reduced FITFI Support
KuCoin removed Step App from its platform on July 30.
The exchange set Aug. 31 as the deadline for FITFI withdrawals.
Bybit had announced the delisting of FITFI spot trading earlier in April.
These delistings reduced the number of major platforms where users could trade or withdraw the token before Step App disclosed its closure.
Holders should check the official announcement from each exchange because trading, deposit and withdrawal deadlines may differ.
They should not assume that Step App’s Aug. 21 deadline applies to every trading platform.
Upbit Delisting Report Remains Unconfirmed
The source information also referred to a possible FITFI delisting announcement from Upbit dated July 16.
However, no corresponding official Upbit notice was located during the original review.
That claim should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless Upbit publishes or confirms an official announcement.
Users holding FITFI on any exchange should rely only on notices appearing within their exchange account or on the platform’s verified announcement page.
Exchange Deadlines May Create Additional Risks
Even when an exchange keeps withdrawals open after Step App shuts down, successful transfers may depend on continued blockchain and wallet functionality.
If Step Network infrastructure or related services stop operating, exchanges could suspend withdrawals earlier than expected.
Users should therefore avoid waiting until the final day.
A small test transfer can help confirm that the receiving wallet and network are working correctly before moving the full balance.
Exchange users should also check whether FITFI is held on Avalanche, Step Network or another supported chain.
FITFI Once Reached $0.7319
FITFI experienced extreme price volatility during its four-year history.
According to CoinGecko data cited in the report, the token reached an all-time high of approximately $0.7319 on May 5, 2022.
Its recorded public sale price was $0.0049.
That placed the peak price at roughly 149 times the public sale value.
However, this figure represents the token’s highest recorded market price. It does not mean every investor earned a 149-fold return.
Many users may have purchased after the token had already risen or continued holding while its value declined.
Early User Growth Did Not Guarantee Sustainability
Step App reported more than one million registrations before its original launch.
A project review from 2022 also said the application recorded more than 115,000 downloads during its first month.
The team later claimed the application had exceeded one million total downloads.
However, Step App did not publish independently audited figures for active users, revenue, retention or ongoing transaction activity when announcing the shutdown.
Download totals can show initial interest, but they do not necessarily indicate whether users remain active or whether a project has developed a sustainable business model.
Move-to-Earn Projects Faced Economic Challenges
Move-to-earn platforms generally depend on a balance between token rewards, user growth and demand for in-app assets.
When a project gives tokens to users for exercising, it must create enough demand or revenue to support those rewards.
If token issuance grows faster than demand, selling pressure can increase and the token’s price may decline.
A falling token price can then make rewards less attractive, reducing user participation and creating further pressure on the ecosystem.
Step App did not say whether these issues contributed to its shutdown, but they have affected several blockchain reward applications.
Step App Joins Other Crypto Platforms Closing in 2026
The closure comes during a year in which several cryptocurrency applications have ended operations.
Some projects have cited an inability to reach sustainable scale, while others have pointed to funding problems, limited adoption or regulatory uncertainty.
DeFi application Legend also announced a shutdown after failing to achieve sufficient scale.
Step App’s situation differs because the company did not publicly disclose why it could no longer continue.
The lack of explanation leaves users with limited information about the project’s remaining finances, infrastructure and token support.
No Token Swap or Compensation Announced
Step App has not announced a plan to exchange FITFI or KCAL for another cryptocurrency.
It also has not announced compensation for users, NFT holders or investors.
There is no confirmed successor application that will accept existing Step App assets.
Any website or social media account claiming to offer an official migration should be treated cautiously unless it is linked through Step App’s verified channels.
Users should never enter a wallet seed phrase or private key into a migration website.
Legitimate projects do not require users to reveal private recovery information to transfer tokens.
What Step App Users Should Do Now
Users should begin by reviewing all assets connected to the Step App ecosystem.
Locked tokens should be unstaked before Aug. 21. Exchange users should compare the project deadline with the dates announced by their specific trading platform.
Important actions may include:
- Unstaking FITFI or KCAL
- Withdrawing tokens from closing exchanges
- Moving supported assets to a compatible wallet
- Saving account and transaction records
- Checking NFT access
- Confirming the correct blockchain network
- Testing transfers with a small amount
- Monitoring verified Step App announcements
Users should complete these steps early enough to resolve any technical problems before services become unavailable.
FITFI Holders Face Several Different Deadlines
The key dates currently include:
- Aug. 18: Bithumb ends FITFI trading
- Aug. 21: Step App shuts down its services
- Aug. 31: KuCoin ends FITFI withdrawals
- Sept. 18: Bithumb ends FITFI withdrawals
These dates apply to different services and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Other exchanges may impose their own restrictions or close deposits and withdrawals without following the same timetable.
Users should review their accounts regularly for updated notices.
Step App’s Four-Year Run Comes to an End
Step App’s closure brings an end to a project that attempted to combine fitness, NFTs and cryptocurrency rewards.
The application reported more than one million downloads and billions of tracked steps, but it did not disclose why continued operations were no longer possible.
For users, the immediate concern is recovering or transferring assets before access ends on Aug. 21.
With exchange support for FITFI also declining, holders should carefully review every relevant deadline and avoid waiting until the final hours to act.
Unless Step App publishes further instructions, there will be no announced token migration, successor platform or continuation plan after the shutdown.
