Strategy has raised roughly $2 billion through sales of its common stock while keeping its Bitcoin holdings unchanged, signaling a continued shift toward building cash and actively managing its capital structure.
The company sold about 18.26 million MSTR shares between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23 through its at-the-market offering program. Instead of using the proceeds to buy more Bitcoin, Strategy directed most of the money into cash reserves and preferred stock repurchases.
Following the transactions, Strategy held a combined $6.69 billion in cash across two separate accounts, while its Bitcoin treasury remained unchanged at 840,447 BTC.
Strategy Raises Nearly $2 Billion From MSTR Sales
A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed that Strategy sold approximately 18.26 million MSTR shares during the week ended Aug. 23.
The sales generated close to $2 billion in proceeds.
Strategy used $136.4 million of the money to repurchase around 1.43 million shares of its STRC perpetual preferred stock.
Another $300 million was transferred into the company’s existing U.S. dollar reserve, while approximately $1.59 billion was placed into a newly created cash account.
These transactions increased Strategy’s U.S. dollar reserve to about $5.1 billion and brought its new cash pool to $1.59 billion.
Combined, the company now holds approximately $6.69 billion in cash.
Strategy Builds a Larger Cash Cushion
The newly established cash account gives Strategy more flexibility when deciding how to allocate capital.
According to the filing, the money could eventually be used for Bitcoin purchases, preferred stock dividends, debt repayments or repurchases of the company’s securities.
However, Strategy has not committed the funds to any specific use and has not provided a timetable for deploying the cash.
This suggests the company is prioritizing liquidity at a time when it is managing a much broader capital structure than in previous years.
Strategy has increasingly relied on a mix of Bitcoin, common stock, preferred securities and cash rather than directing nearly every capital raise into Bitcoin.
Cash Building Has Accelerated Since June
Strategy has been steadily increasing its cash reserves over the past several months.
By late July, the company had increased its U.S. dollar reserve to approximately $3.75 billion after adding another $525 million.
During that period, Strategy raised roughly $544.5 million from the sale of about 5.43 million MSTR shares.
Of those proceeds, $25 million went toward repurchasing STRC preferred stock, while the majority remained in cash.
Bitcoin holdings were unchanged during that week as well.
The pattern continued through August.
Between Aug. 10 and Aug. 16, Strategy raised approximately $333.7 million by selling around 3.46 million MSTR shares.
Roughly $149.1 million was added to the dollar reserve, $132.2 million was used for STRC repurchases and another $52.4 million went toward STRC dividend payments.
The reserve stood at around $4.8 billion before the latest $300 million addition pushed it to $5.1 billion.
Strategy Does Not Buy Bitcoin Despite Fresh Capital
One of the most notable details in the latest filing is that Strategy made no Bitcoin purchases between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23.
The company also did not sell any Bitcoin during the period.
Its total holdings therefore remain at 840,447 BTC.
Strategy acquired those Bitcoins for a combined cost of approximately $63.36 billion, including fees and expenses.
That gives the company an average acquisition price of about $75,385 per Bitcoin.
The pause stands out because Strategy has historically been known for using capital raises to aggressively expand its Bitcoin treasury.
Its recent decisions suggest that management is taking a more flexible approach to capital allocation.
Strategy Previously Reduced Its Bitcoin Holdings
Strategy’s current Bitcoin balance is lower than it was earlier this summer.
The company held 847,363 BTC in late June before introducing a new capital framework that gave management greater flexibility to use Bitcoin and cash to meet financial obligations.
As part of that framework, Strategy authorized a Bitcoin Monetization Program that allows the company to sell up to $1.25 billion worth of BTC to support its U.S. dollar reserve.
The framework also included separate $1 billion repurchase programs for common shares and preferred securities.
Between June 29 and July 5, Strategy sold 3,588 BTC for approximately $216 million.
The company said those proceeds were used to fund distributions on its Digital Credit securities and replenish cash that had previously been taken from its reserve.
That sale reduced Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings to 843,775 BTC.
More Bitcoin Was Sold in August
Strategy reduced its Bitcoin position again in early August.
Between Aug. 3 and Aug. 9, the company sold another 1,690 BTC for approximately $108.6 million.
The proceeds were used to repurchase around 1.15 million STRC preferred shares.
After that transaction, Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings fell to 840,447 BTC.
The company has maintained that balance through the following two weekly reporting periods.
This is a significant shift from the company’s earlier strategy of consistently adding Bitcoin whenever it raised fresh capital.
STRC Repurchases Become a Major Priority
Preferred stock has become one of the biggest uses of Strategy’s recently raised funds.
STRC, also known as Stretch, is a perpetual preferred security built around a $100 reference value and a variable dividend rate.
Strategy has been using a combination of dividend adjustments, cash reserves and share repurchases to manage the security.
During the week ended Aug. 23, the company spent approximately $136.4 million repurchasing around 1.43 million STRC shares.
That followed another $132.2 million spent on roughly 1.39 million shares during the previous week.
One week earlier, Strategy used approximately $108.6 million to repurchase around 1.15 million STRC shares.
The repeated buybacks show that supporting the preferred security has become an important part of the company’s capital management strategy.
Bitcoin Purchases Could Resume if STRC Recovers
Strategy CEO Phong Le previously linked future Bitcoin purchases to the performance of STRC.
He said the company planned to resume issuing STRC once the security returned to its $100 par value.
If that happens, Strategy could use new preferred stock issuance to raise additional money and potentially buy more Bitcoin.
The strategy creates a relationship between the performance of the company’s preferred securities and its ability to expand its Bitcoin holdings.
For now, however, Strategy appears more focused on improving liquidity and supporting its existing securities.
Strategy’s Cash Reserve Has Grown Rapidly
Strategy first created its U.S. dollar reserve in December 2025 with approximately $1.44 billion.
The reserve was designed to fund preferred stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt.
The goal was to reduce the need to repeatedly raise capital or sell Bitcoin whenever scheduled obligations became due.
By the end of May, however, the reserve had fallen to around $900 million.
Strategy then began rebuilding it more aggressively.
The reserve increased to approximately $2.55 billion by early July, then climbed to $3 billion by July 12.
It reached $3.225 billion by July 19 and $3.75 billion by July 26.
Further additions pushed the reserve to approximately $4.65 billion on Aug. 9 and around $4.8 billion by Aug. 16.
The latest $300 million transfer has now increased the reserve to $5.1 billion.
New Cash Account Adds Even More Flexibility
The new $1.59 billion cash account is separate from Strategy’s existing U.S. dollar reserve.
Management can use the money depending on market conditions and the company’s financing needs.
Potential uses include buying Bitcoin, paying preferred dividends, meeting debt obligations or repurchasing securities.
Keeping the money uncommitted gives Strategy the ability to react quickly if opportunities emerge.
For example, the company could buy Bitcoin during a market decline or use the funds to support preferred securities if necessary.
This flexibility appears to be becoming more important as Strategy manages an increasingly complex combination of equity, debt, preferred stock, Bitcoin and cash.
Strategy Is Evolving Beyond a Simple Bitcoin Buying Model
Strategy built its reputation by aggressively accumulating Bitcoin and using capital markets to finance those purchases.
That model has not disappeared, but it is becoming more complicated.
The company is now balancing several competing priorities.
It must manage debt payments, preferred stock dividends, share repurchases, liquidity needs and its enormous Bitcoin treasury.
As a result, not every MSTR stock sale is automatically being converted into Bitcoin.
The latest $2 billion capital raise is a clear example.
Instead of increasing its Bitcoin holdings, Strategy placed most of the proceeds into cash and used part of the money to repurchase STRC shares.
What Comes Next for Strategy?
Strategy now has significant financial flexibility.
Its 840,447 BTC position remains one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holdings in the world, while its combined cash position has increased to approximately $6.69 billion.
That cash could eventually fund another major Bitcoin purchase.
However, the company could also continue using it for dividends, securities repurchases and debt obligations.
The next move may depend heavily on market conditions, the price of Bitcoin and the performance of Strategy’s preferred securities.
For investors, the latest filing shows that Strategy’s capital strategy is no longer focused exclusively on accumulating as much Bitcoin as possible.
The company is increasingly managing Bitcoin, cash, common stock and preferred securities as parts of a broader balance-sheet strategy.
For now, Strategy has chosen liquidity over additional Bitcoin accumulation, leaving its holdings unchanged at 840,447 BTC despite raising roughly $2 billion in fresh capital.
