“Swap 1 ETH for at least 3,200 USDC.”
The protocol then leaves the execution details to professional market participants known as solvers. Since intents remain off-chain until settlement, they are hidden from public mempool bots, providing greater protection against MEV attacks.
How solvers execute trades
Solvers are specialized entities that compete to fulfill user intents.
When an intent is submitted:
- The protocol broadcasts it to registered solvers.
- Each solver searches for the most efficient execution route.
- Solvers may combine liquidity from multiple decentralized exchanges, centralized exchanges, private inventories, or even cross-chain sources.
- They submit competing bids.
- The protocol selects the best offer, and the trade is settled on-chain.
Because multiple solvers compete against each other, users often receive better prices than they would through traditional AMM swaps.
How intent-based trading reduces MEV
One of the biggest advantages of intent-based systems is their resistance to Maximal Extractable Value (MEV).
Traditional blockchain transactions sit in the public mempool before confirmation, allowing bots to monitor pending trades and front-run or sandwich users.

Its Dutch auction model encourages solvers to compete quickly, while a fallback mechanism ensures users always receive at least the standard Uniswap price if no solver provides a better offer.

Across applies the intent model to cross-chain transfers.
Instead of waiting for traditional bridge confirmations, relayers instantly provide liquidity on the destination chain using their own funds before later claiming reimbursement. This dramatically reduces bridge times while simplifying the user experience.
ERC-7683 aims to standardize intents
Today, different protocols use different intent formats, preventing solvers from competing across every platform.
The proposed ERC-7683 standard aims to solve this problem by creating a universal intent format that any protocol can adopt. A standardized system could increase competition among solvers and improve pricing for users across the entire DeFi ecosystem.
Challenges of intent-based trading
Although intent-based protocols offer significant benefits, they also introduce new considerations.

Artificial intelligence is also beginning to play a role, with AI-powered solvers optimizing liquidity routes and predicting market conditions more efficiently. At the same time, wallet providers are increasingly integrating intent-based execution, allowing users to benefit from better pricing without needing to understand the underlying technology.
