VTB Bank, Russia’s second-largest lender and one of its most heavily sanctioned institutions, is preparing to step into the cryptocurrency market. The bank plans to launch regulated spot crypto trading for wealthy clients in 2026, marking the first major Russian bank to offer such a service.
Restricted Access for High-Net-Worth Investors Only
According to Russian media, VTB will open spot crypto trading only to qualified investors individuals who meet strict income or portfolio thresholds under local regulations. The bank is currently testing the service with a small group of high-net-worth clients, and officials have made it clear that this will not be available to the general public anytime soon.
Russia’s Growing Reliance on Crypto
Russia’s stance on digital assets has shifted significantly over the past few years. With Western sanctions cutting the country off from traditional global financial networks, cryptocurrency adoption has surged.
Government officials have acknowledged that millions of Russians now use digital assets for savings and payments, despite earlier attempts to restrict such activity. Reports also suggest that Russia has used cryptocurrency settlements in parts of its oil trade with China and India, particularly as sanctions tightened.
Regulators have hinted that more banks may soon receive approval to operate in crypto markets, as long as they follow strict oversight rules.
VTB Follows Global Banking Trends
VTB says its move is driven by rising customer demand and global trends. Major banks across Europe and Asia including Standard Chartered, Santander, BBVA, and DBS have already rolled out cryptocurrency trading or custody services.
By entering the market, VTB is signaling that Russian financial institutions do not want to fall behind in the digital asset race, even as geopolitical tensions and compliance challenges continue to shape access to global markets.
While VTB did not disclose the size of its crypto operations or expected volumes, the decision highlights a growing shift in Russia toward regulated crypto integration especially for high-value clients who are shaping financial demand inside the country.
