Holders of the Solana-based memecoin WhiteWhale were hit with a sharp selloff this week after large wallets offloaded roughly $1.3 million worth of tokens, triggering a rapid 60% price collapse within minutes.
The token, which launched around three months ago on Pump.fun, saw intense selling pressure that erased much of its market capitalization almost instantly, according to on-chain data. The sudden move sparked accusations of a rug pull from parts of the community, while others pointed to typical memecoin volatility.
Whale selling drives sudden collapse
Blockchain data shows that a trader known as Remus accumulated approximately 1.5% of the total WhiteWhale supply early in the token’s lifecycle at relatively low prices. As the memecoin gained traction and rallied, the position increased significantly in value.
Remus later sold a portion of those holdings into the rally, contributing to the sharp downside move. Despite the selloff, on-chain records indicate that the trader still controls a sizable WhiteWhale position, even after the price decline.
Market analyst Darky highlighted the crash on social media, pointing to how quickly sentiment flipped once the large sell orders hit the market.
Community disputes “rug pull” claims
Members of the WhiteWhale community pushed back against allegations of malicious intent, describing the event as a liquidity distribution rather than a coordinated exit. According to community statements, the selling was intended to reduce token concentration and expand ownership across a broader base of holders.
Market data shows that WhiteWhale staged a modest recovery by Tuesday, though prices remain well below pre-dump levels.
Memecoin risks under the spotlight
The WhiteWhale incident comes as new data underscores the high failure rate across the crypto market, particularly among memecoins. A recent report from CoinGecko found that more than half of all cryptocurrencies have failed, with 2025 marking a record year for token collapses.
According to the report, roughly 11.6 million tokens failed in 2025 alone, with memecoins accounting for a significant share of the damage amid heightened volatility and speculative excess. The fourth quarter of 2025 was especially brutal, recording millions of project shutdowns and abandoned tokens.
By comparison, CoinGecko noted that around 1.4 million projects failed in 2024, already a historically high number at the time.
A familiar pattern for Solana memecoins
WhiteWhale’s sudden wipeout highlights a recurring pattern in the fast-moving Solana memecoin ecosystem: rapid launches, explosive rallies, concentrated ownership, and equally fast collapses once large holders begin to exit.
For traders, the episode serves as another reminder that liquidity, holder distribution, and on-chain behavior often matter more than narratives in determining whether a memecoin can survive beyond its initial hype.
