Crypto prices moved sharply lower on Tuesday as renewed selling pressure swept across global markets, dragging Bitcoin below the key $90,000 level and weighing heavily on major altcoins.
At press time, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization had fallen 3.4% to roughly $3.1 trillion. Bitcoin was trading near $89,384, down 3.2% over the past 24 hours. Losses were more pronounced across altcoins, with BNB sliding 5.2% to $879, Monero plunging 19% to $491, and Pump.fun dropping 5.9% to $0.002436.
Market stress was quickly reflected in sentiment and derivatives data. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell eight points to 24, pushing deeper into “extreme fear.” According to CoinGlass, 24-hour liquidations surged 481% to $1.09 billion, as leveraged positions were rapidly unwound. Open interest across the crypto market also declined 1.73% to $133 billion.
Despite the sharp sell-off, broader momentum indicators suggest the market has not yet entered full capitulation. The average relative strength index across major assets hovered near 40, pointing to weakness but not deeply oversold conditions.
Geopolitical tensions weigh on crypto and equities
The latest downturn appears closely tied to rising geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States could impose new tariffs on several European countries, starting at 10% and potentially rising if negotiations fail.
The dispute is part of broader tensions involving Denmark and Greenland, with European Union officials warning that retaliatory measures worth up to $100 billion are under consideration.
As concerns over a renewed trade conflict grew, investors moved away from risk-sensitive assets. Cryptocurrencies tracked global equities lower as traders reduced exposure and cut leverage. The sell-off was amplified by renewed stress in global bond markets, particularly in Japan.
Japan’s government bond market saw heightened volatility, with yields on 10-year bonds briefly reaching their highest levels since 1999. Weak demand at recent bond auctions raised concerns over rising borrowing costs and fiscal stability, adding to the risk-off mood and triggering forced liquidations across crypto markets.
While crypto and stocks declined, capital flowed into traditional safe havens. Spot gold surged above $4,800 per ounce, setting a new record after gaining roughly $500 since the start of the year.
Short-term outlook remains volatile
In the near term, analysts warn that downside risks remain elevated if tariff tensions persist or escalate. Bitcoin could revisit the $85,000–$88,000 range if selling pressure continues, while altcoins may face steeper drawdowns of 5% to 10% during periods of thin liquidity.
That said, sharp rebounds remain possible. Any easing in trade rhetoric or a shift toward calmer headlines could trigger a swift recovery toward the $92,000–$94,000 zone, particularly if large buyers step in on dips.
Fundstrat chairman Tom Lee recently noted that both crypto and equity markets may remain under pressure early in the year due to political and trade uncertainty. However, he expects conditions to improve later in 2026, with Bitcoin potentially reaching new highs once excess leverage is cleared and institutional participation deepens.
For now, crypto markets remain highly sensitive to macro headlines, as investors balance near-term uncertainty against longer-term growth expectations.
