A decade-old tech mishap turns into global entertainment as the hunt for James Howells’ Bitcoin wallet hits the screen
A lost hard drive, a billion-dollar mistake, and a landfill in Wales are now the unlikely stars of a high-stakes docuseries set to captivate global audiences. Entertainment company LEBUL has officially acquired the exclusive rights to the story of James Howells, the British engineer who accidentally discarded a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin in 2013 now worth over $800 million.
Titled ‘The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells,’ the project will unfold across multiple platforms, including a premium documentary series, a podcast, and a robust social media storytelling campaign.
“This isn’t just content,” said Reese Van Allen, President of Unscripted Entertainment at LEBUL. “It’s a live-action tech thriller with nearly a billion dollars on the line.”
The Backstory: A Costly Mistake
James Howells, an early Bitcoin miner, claims that in 2013, his partner mistakenly threw away a hard drive that stored his crypto wallet. Since then, Howells has been locked in a legal and emotional battle with Newport City Council, attempting to gain excavation access to the city’s landfill where the hard drive is believed to be buried.
He has offered various proposals over the years, including splitting recovered funds with the city and its residents. At one point, he even requested £495 million in compensation. However, courts have consistently ruled against him due to environmental regulations and property rights.
Legal Setbacks and Future Plans
In early 2025, Howells suffered a major blow when Cardiff High Court sided with the city, which plans to close the landfill and redevelop part of it into a solar energy farm. Still, the engineer remains undeterred. He has hinted at appealing to the UK Supreme Court and has even floated the idea of purchasing the landfill outright.

LEBUL’s docuseries will intertwine real-time legal drama, environmental concerns, and the cultural phenomenon of Bitcoin to tell a story that’s part thriller, part modern folklore. The production house says that streaming giants and crypto sponsors are already circling the project, which promises to deliver a compelling mix of blockchain lore and personal obsession.
