A global law enforcement operation led by INTERPOL has dealt a major blow to international fraud and cryptocurrency-linked money laundering networks. The coordinated campaign resulted in thousands of arrests, the freezing of tens of thousands of bank accounts, and the recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars connected to criminal activity.
Running from January 15 to April 30, 2026, Operation First Light brought together authorities from 97 countries and territories to combat financial crimes that increasingly rely on digital assets and online scams. The operation focused on disrupting fraud schemes while identifying the criminal organizations responsible for moving stolen funds across borders.
Global crackdown targets fraud and crypto money laundering
According to INTERPOL, the operation led to the arrest of 5,811 individuals, while investigators identified 15,606 suspects linked to various financial crimes.
Authorities also solved more than 23,700 cases, identified over 142,000 victims, and blocked more than 31,000 bank accounts used for illegal financial activities. In total, law enforcement agencies intercepted approximately $293 million in illicit assets, including both traditional funds and cryptocurrency.
The operation mainly targeted crimes such as:
- Business email compromise (BEC)
- Romance scams
- Investment fraud
- Sextortion
- Online impersonation scams
- Money laundering networks supporting cybercrime
INTERPOL also used its Global Rapid Intervention of Payments (I-GRIP) system, allowing investigators to quickly freeze suspicious bank transfers and cryptocurrency transactions before criminals could move the funds further.
Thai authorities uncover large crypto laundering network
One of the most significant investigations took place in Thailand, where police dismantled a cryptocurrency laundering operation connected to romance scams.
Investigators arrested two suspects accused of moving stolen funds through multiple cryptocurrencies using cross-chain token swaps designed to hide transaction trails.
Authorities revealed that one suspect, only 20 years old, controlled a crypto wallet that processed more than $122.5 million in transactions over just ten months.
The use of multiple blockchain networks made tracing the money more difficult, highlighting how cybercriminals continue adopting advanced techniques to conceal illegal proceeds.
Multiple countries prevent millions in financial losses
Operation First Light also produced major results outside Thailand.
In Singapore and Oman, authorities worked together to block a $6.6 million transfer connected to a business email compromise scheme before the funds reached criminals.
Meanwhile, police in Macao prevented a victim from sending nearly $372,000 to scammers pretending to be government officials.
In Eswatini, investigators arrested 82 suspects linked to an online criminal organization operating from a fake Brazilian police station. The group allegedly convinced victims to transfer money for “safe keeping” before stealing the funds through money laundering networks.
Authorities in Palau also deported 22 individuals accused of operating hotel-based scam centers that targeted overseas victims using cryptocurrency transactions and illegal online gambling platforms.
INTERPOL warns cybercriminals continue evolving
Tomonobu Kaya, Director of INTERPOL’s Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre, said organized criminal groups continue exploiting human psychology through increasingly sophisticated online scams.
He emphasized that international cooperation remains one of the most effective tools for disrupting cyber-enabled financial crime and the money laundering organizations supporting these activities.
The operation demonstrated how fraud networks often span multiple countries, making global coordination essential for successful investigations.
Crypto laundering remains a growing global concern
The latest crackdown follows several major international actions against cryptocurrency-based money laundering this year.
Recently, U.S. authorities charged the alleged operators of the AudiA6 crypto laundering service, accusing them of processing more than $389 million in illegal transactions while receiving over 10,000 Bitcoin from criminal clients.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Treasury Department also imposed sanctions on a network accused of helping North Korea convert cryptocurrency into cash while disguising the origin of illicit funds.
These actions show that regulators and law enforcement agencies are placing increasing attention on crypto-related financial crime while improving cooperation across international borders.
Although digital assets continue gaining mainstream adoption, global authorities are strengthening their ability to trace blockchain transactions, freeze suspicious transfers, and dismantle the organizations using cryptocurrency to move criminal proceeds.
As cross-border financial crime becomes more sophisticated, international operations like Operation First Light are expected to play an increasingly important role in protecting individuals, businesses, and financial systems worldwide.
