Memecoins may be the hottest trend in crypto right now, but Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron says the industry has bigger issues than dog-themed tokens. In a conversation with crypto.news, Boiron argued that the real problem isn’t memecoins themselves it’s the lack of reliable tools to help users separate signal from noise.
Instead of dismissing memecoins entirely, Boiron is calling for a “Google for crypto”: a decentralized system that indexes all tokens but highlights those that meet transparent, on-chain standards such as liquidity, audits, real usage, and genuine community strength.
Memecoins: Fun or a Distraction?
Boiron doesn’t oppose memecoins outright. In fact, he admits he trades them himself. He sees them as a playful, creative way to build tokens and communities. The problem, he says, comes when memecoins are designed purely as pump-and-dump schemes that siphon money and attention away from real infrastructure projects.
“There’s nothing negative about memecoins as long as they are just that memecoins and not pump and dump schemes,” Boiron said.
With over a million tokens launched this year alone, most fade into obscurity, making it harder for legitimate projects to stand out. That flood of noise, Boiron warns, risks pulling developer focus and investor capital away from the areas that actually need it.
A Call for Better Discovery
Boiron’s solution isn’t censorship it’s curation. He envisions decentralized discovery tools that make all tokens visible but elevate those with verifiable substance.
Think of it as a search engine for crypto: every project is indexed, but ranking is based on transparent criteria like liquidity, audited security, active users, and real communities. Unlike traditional gatekeepers, the filtering would happen via open algorithms and community input, ensuring no one central authority controls what gets visibility.
Polygon’s Own Focus
While the memecoin boom rages elsewhere, Polygon has no plans to chase it. Instead, Boiron says the company is staying focused on what it sees as long-term value drivers:
- Payments
- Stablecoins
- Real-world assets (RWAs)
These are the areas, he argues, where blockchain has clear, lasting utility. Polygon’s work on stablecoins and cross-border payments already attracts serious projects tackling real problems, and the upcoming Agglayer will give legitimate teams even more room to prove their value across chains.
“Polygon is not trying to be everything to everyone,” Boiron explained.
Reconciling Memecoin Mania
Despite his critiques, Boiron acknowledges memecoins’ undeniable success. The top 20 memecoins account for $65 billion in market cap, even though more than 10 million memecoins exist. That means just 20 projects make up more than 85% of all memecoin value proof of how much noise outweighs substance.
To Boiron, that imbalance isn’t something to “fix” but rather the natural outcome of a speculative, gambling-driven culture. Some people come for the memes and stay for the hype but over time, many will discover other parts of crypto that solve real problems.
Lessons from Memecoin Communities
If there’s one thing memecoins do better than most serious projects, it’s community building. Memecoins create excitement, shared stories, and viral growth that serious infrastructure projects often lack. Boiron believes there’s plenty to learn from that energy.
“Technology adoption is just as much about community and culture as it is about code,” he said.
For serious projects, the challenge is to channel that same enthusiasm toward use cases like DeFi, payments, or RWAs without losing credibility.
The Road Ahead
Boiron believes the future of crypto discovery lies in decentralized curation tools that help users cut through the noise without shutting the door on innovation. Combined with education and real-world use cases, these mechanisms could help shift attention from endless memecoin launches to projects that combine strong communities with lasting utility.
In the meantime, Polygon is staying the course: supporting the infrastructure that turns crypto from speculation into substance.
