Revolut has started rolling out a new euro-backed stablecoin, EURR, across parts of Europe at a time when Tether’s USDT is facing growing regulatory restrictions under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework.
EURR became available to Revolut customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal on Aug. 26, with a broader European Economic Area rollout planned later in 2026. The stablecoin is issued by Bridge Building S.A., the Luxembourg-based entity of Stripe-owned Bridge, while Revolut provides access to its large European customer base.
The timing is significant. USDT has been removed from MiCA-licensed exchanges in the EEA since July 1 after Tether chose not to seek the required authorization. That has opened new opportunities for regulated stablecoins designed specifically for the European market.
What Is Revolut’s EURR Stablecoin?
Despite carrying the Revolut distribution advantage, EURR is not directly issued by Revolut.
The token is issued by Bridge Building S.A., part of stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge, which Stripe acquired in 2024 for approximately $1.1 billion.
Bridge is responsible for issuing the token, managing reserves, and handling MiCA compliance, while Revolut acts as the distribution platform.
This arrangement gives EURR a major advantage from the beginning: access to an established fintech customer base rather than having to attract crypto users from scratch.
EURR initially launched on Ethereum and is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the euro. Bridge manages the reserves backing the token according to MiCA requirements.
Revolut is also offering fiat conversions without fees or spreads, positioning EURR as an entry point into its wider crypto ecosystem rather than simply a standalone revenue-generating product.
More importantly, EURR may only be the beginning. Revolut has indicated that it plans to introduce stablecoins denominated in additional currencies, potentially turning its platform into a multi-currency stablecoin ecosystem.
Why Tether Chose Not to Comply With MiCA
Tether’s absence from regulated European exchanges was not accidental.
The company chose not to pursue MiCA authorization because of concerns surrounding the regulation’s reserve requirements.
One of the biggest issues is the requirement for stablecoin issuers to hold a substantial portion of their reserves as bank deposits at EU credit institutions.
Tether’s business model, by comparison, relies heavily on U.S. Treasury securities. These assets generate significant interest income for the company.
Moving a large percentage of USDT’s reserves from Treasury securities into European bank deposits could reduce that income while introducing additional banking counterparty risks.
Tether therefore concluded that restructuring its global reserve strategy to maintain access to Europe was not economically attractive.
The company reported approximately $5.2 billion in net profit during the first half of 2026, with interest generated from Treasury holdings contributing heavily to its earnings.
USDT Remains the World’s Largest Stablecoin
Losing access to regulated European exchanges has not removed Tether from its dominant global position.
As of August 2026, USDT represented approximately 59% of the global stablecoin market, with around $186 billion in circulation.
USDC held approximately 23%, representing about $75 billion.
However, another important shift is occurring beneath those market capitalization figures.
USDC has overtaken USDT in annual transaction volume, recording approximately $18.3 trillion compared with $13.3 trillion for USDT.
The global stablecoin market itself has grown to approximately $316 billion, demonstrating that regulatory changes in Europe are occurring against the backdrop of continued worldwide stablecoin adoption.
Circle Gains a Major MiCA Advantage
Tether’s decision to stay outside MiCA has created a major opportunity for Circle.
Among the world’s 50 largest stablecoins by market capitalization, the article identifies only three as meeting MiCA requirements: Circle’s USDC and EURC and Paxos-linked USDG.
Circle prepared for European regulation well ahead of the deadline.
The company obtained an Electronic Money Institution license in France in July 2024, giving it considerable time to establish the compliance infrastructure required under MiCA.
That early preparation has given Circle a substantial competitive advantage as non-compliant stablecoins disappear from regulated European trading platforms.
However, this situation also creates a potential concentration problem.
Rules intended to make stablecoins safer have effectively reduced the number of large tokens available through regulated European exchanges, strengthening Circle’s position in the market.
EURR introduces another compliant alternative, but it is euro-denominated. Investors specifically looking for dollar-denominated stablecoins still have considerably fewer regulated choices.
Revolut’s Biggest Advantage Is Distribution
The most important part of the EURR story may not be its blockchain technology or reserve structure.
It is Revolut’s distribution network.
Revolut has more than 50 million European customers and approximately 16 million cryptocurrency users globally. By comparison, Circle’s EURC had roughly 240,000 unique on-chain holders, according to figures cited in the article.
This gives EURR immediate access to a potential audience that most crypto-native stablecoins would take years to build.
Even if only a small percentage of Revolut’s customers begin using EURR, the token could quickly establish a substantial European user base.
The first rollout covers Denmark, Poland, and Portugal, representing approximately 2 million Revolut customers.
A wider EEA expansion is expected to eventually include major markets such as Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.
Once that happens, EURR would become more than another token listed on cryptocurrency exchanges. It would exist directly inside a financial application already used by millions of Europeans for everyday banking.
Fintech Companies See Opportunity in Stablecoins
Revolut’s move reflects a broader trend among fintech companies.
Stablecoins can allow financial applications to connect traditional banking services with blockchain-based payments and financial products.
For Revolut, EURR could serve several purposes.
It can keep customers inside the Revolut ecosystem when they want euro-denominated crypto exposure, provide the company with information about how customers interact with blockchain products, and potentially create new revenue opportunities around stablecoin infrastructure.
The larger opportunity could come from multiple currencies.
If Revolut eventually introduces stablecoins denominated in currencies such as the British pound, Swiss franc, or other currencies already supported by its banking platform, it could create a multi-currency stablecoin system inside a single consumer application.
That strategy differs from both Tether and Circle.
Tether’s model has historically benefited heavily from reserve income, while Circle has focused extensively on regulated stablecoin infrastructure and institutional integrations.
Revolut’s advantage could instead come from direct consumer distribution.
European USDT Users Move Toward DEXs
MiCA restrictions have not necessarily eliminated European demand for USDT.
Instead, some trading activity has reportedly moved from regulated centralized exchanges toward decentralized exchanges.
According to figures cited in the article, DEX activity associated with European users increased following the July 1 deadline, with platforms such as Uniswap V3 and Curve Finance absorbing part of the displaced trading activity.
This shift creates another regulatory challenge.
Users moving to decentralized platforms may face smart-contract vulnerabilities, blockchain transaction fees, MEV-related risks, and fewer consumer protections than they would receive through regulated centralized platforms.
EURR provides a compliant alternative for users willing to hold a euro-denominated stablecoin.
However, it cannot completely replace USDT for traders who specifically need dollar-denominated liquidity for trading pairs, international payments, or DeFi applications.
Europe’s Stablecoin Competition Is Growing
Revolut and Circle are not the only companies targeting Europe’s regulated stablecoin market.
According to the article, around 35 regulated e-money tokens had been issued by 21 entities under MiCA as of the first quarter of 2026.
Most remained relatively small, with circulation below $50 million.
Several major financial institutions are also entering the sector.
Societe Generale’s FORGE platform has developed EUR CoinVertible for institutional use, while Deutsche Bank has announced plans involving a euro stablecoin. Banking Circle has also launched EURI with settlement infrastructure connected to Europe’s traditional payment system.
However, Revolut has something many of these competitors lack: a massive existing consumer audience.
Institutional stablecoins may succeed in treasury management and wholesale finance, while EURR is positioned more directly toward everyday fintech and crypto users.
Stripe Could Become Another Major Distribution Channel
Another interesting part of the EURR structure is Bridge’s ownership.
Bridge is a subsidiary of Stripe, one of the world’s largest payment infrastructure companies.
Currently, Revolut is providing the consumer distribution channel for EURR. But the corporate relationship creates the possibility of much broader payment integrations in the future.
The source article notes that a direct Stripe integration has not been announced. Therefore, such an expansion remains a possibility rather than a confirmed plan.
If stablecoins issued through Bridge were eventually integrated more deeply into Stripe’s payment infrastructure, their reach could extend far beyond cryptocurrency trading.
U.S. and European Stablecoin Rules Are Diverging
Europe’s stablecoin transformation is also happening while the United States develops its own regulatory framework.
The GENIUS Act established rules for stablecoin issuance in the U.S., including requirements around reserve backing and redemption.
However, the U.S. framework does not contain the same bank-deposit requirement that contributed to Tether’s disagreement with MiCA.
This creates the possibility of a fragmented regulatory environment in which a stablecoin could satisfy U.S. requirements while remaining unavailable through regulated European exchanges.
For global exchanges and financial platforms, that could mean different stablecoin products and liquidity pools depending on the user’s jurisdiction.
For consumers, it could also make geographic location increasingly important when determining which digital assets are accessible.
EURR Could Reshape Europe’s Stablecoin Market
Revolut’s entry into stablecoins comes at an important moment for the European crypto industry.
Tether remains dominant globally, but its decision not to pursue MiCA authorization has created space for compliant competitors within Europe.
Circle currently holds a major advantage in regulated dollar stablecoins, while Revolut and Bridge are attempting to build a strong consumer-focused euro alternative.
The biggest factor working in EURR’s favor is distribution.
Rather than convincing millions of people to create accounts with a new crypto company, Revolut can introduce the stablecoin directly to customers already using its financial services.
Several milestones will help determine whether that advantage translates into meaningful adoption, including EURR’s early transaction volume, the speed of Revolut’s wider EEA rollout, growth in circulating supply, and whether additional currency-denominated stablecoins are introduced.
The European stablecoin competition is therefore becoming about more than market capitalization. Regulation, distribution, compliance, and integration with everyday financial services are increasingly determining which stablecoins can reach consumers.
