In a surprising but strategic turn, SharpLink Gaming has rebranded itself from a sports betting affiliate tech firm into the largest publicly traded corporate holder of Ethereum (ETH) now managing a treasury valued at over $1.65 billion.
Backed by a $425 million private placement led by ConsenSys, the blockchain firm founded by Ethereum co-creator Joseph Lubin, SharpLink is now aiming to lead the charge in how companies use crypto as an active part of their balance sheets not just as a speculative bet.
In one of his first interviews since taking the role of Co-CEO, Joseph Chalom opened up about the company’s Ethereum-focused vision, what sets it apart from others in the space, and how SharpLink plans to do more than just hold ETH.
Why Ethereum and Why Now?
According to Chalom, SharpLink’s ETH strategy was heavily inspired by Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin playbook at MicroStrategy, but with a twist: Ethereum is more than just a store of value.
“Ethereum will be the decentralized platform securing stablecoins, tokenized assets, and future financial infrastructure,” Chalom explained. “It’s the trust layer for global finance.”
Backed by Lubin and the ConsenSys team, the decision was made to move fast and decisively. The company has already deployed a large portion of its treasury into ETH and plans to invest the remaining $257 million in the near future, with a focus on buying at attractive prices.
Not Just Holding Activating ETH for Yield
SharpLink isn’t just parking ETH and hoping it goes up. Their goal is to actively manage the Ethereum treasury to generate yield and support the network.
“Staking is our baseline,” Chalom said, “but we’re also exploring restaking, DeFi lending, and selective protocol participation to enhance returns while managing risk.”
The company has already staked the majority of its ETH holdings, earning yield while helping secure the network. Next, it plans to deploy ETH across Ethereum’s DeFi stack, supporting the ecosystem while generating additional yield for shareholders.
And all of this is wrapped into a Nasdaq-listed public equity, under the ticker $SBET, giving investors a liquid way to gain exposure to Ethereum with built-in yield and institutional backing.
The ConsenSys Connection
ConsenSys didn’t just lead the funding round it’s playing a key strategic role. With Lubin as Chairman of the Board, SharpLink is leveraging the deep technical and strategic expertise of one of Ethereum’s foundational firms.
While ConsenSys and SharpLink are distinct entities, their partnership brings unique advantages especially as SharpLink begins exploring ways to integrate Ethereum into its operations and product offerings.
“We’re working closely with ConsenSys to identify the most promising DeFi protocols and staking opportunities,” said Chalom.
Security First, Always
With over a billion dollars in ETH on the books, security is a top concern. Chalom says the company uses industry best practices and custody partners like Galaxy Digital, ParaFi, Anchorage, and Coinbase to safeguard its holdings.
“We know the risks of custody. That’s why we work only with the most trusted players in the space,” he emphasized.
No SharpLink Token Just ETH
Despite the industry trend of launching company-branded tokens, SharpLink has no intention of issuing its own crypto. “The asset is ETH. The ticker is SBET,” Chalom said simply.
Their focus is on becoming a trusted, Ethereum-native treasury operator not a token project or a speculative play.
What Happens to the Sports Betting Side?
SharpLink’s original business focused on affiliate marketing and sportsbook tech, including platforms like PAS.net and C4 BetSense. While crypto is now the core strategy, the company hasn’t abandoned its roots.
Chalom says Ethereum could eventually be integrated into these legacy businesses smart contracts for affiliate tracking, on-chain loyalty rewards, or crypto-based payouts but only if it adds real value.
Standing Apart from the Crowd
With other companies like BitDigital and Bitmine also entering the ETH treasury space, SharpLink is aware that competition is heating up. But Chalom is confident in their advantage:
“We’re not just holding ETH. We’re building on it with guidance from the co-founder of Ethereum himself.”
With leadership experience from BlackRock’s Aladdin platform, crypto ETFs like IBIT and ETHA, and tokenization initiatives like BUIDL, Chalom brings institutional credibility to the crypto frontier.
