The UK and U.S. have formed a joint task force with a clear but challenging mission: deliver proposals within 180 days on how to modernize oversight of crypto and capital markets. The initiative, called the “Transatlantic Task Force for Markets of the Future,” could shape how two of the world’s most influential financial hubs respond to fast-moving digital finance.
A Transatlantic Mandate
The task force was announced on Sept. 22, following U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s visit to Downing Street with UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Emerging from a high-level industry roundtable, the agreement calls for senior officials from both treasuries to co-chair the effort.
Their mandate: draft concrete recommendations for aligning capital markets and digital-asset regulation, reporting back through the UK-U.S. Financial Regulatory Working Group within six months.
Focus on Digital Assets and Market Innovation
According to the statement, the group’s immediate priority is to identify short- to medium-term opportunities for cooperation on crypto regulation, recognizing that formal legislation is still evolving in both countries.
In parallel, the task force will explore long-term innovation in wholesale digital markets — laying a foundation for new financial infrastructure while addressing near-term industry needs. Crucially, the recommendations will be developed “in close collaboration with industry partners,” ensuring that exchanges, asset managers, and technology firms have a seat at the table.
Industry Response
The announcement was met with swift reaction from industry players, with Coinbase highlighting the importance of the partnership. The exchange urged policymakers to focus on tokenizing traditional assets, creating a transatlantic stablecoin corridor, and pursuing mutual recognition of regulatory regimes.
“The UK-US partnership is more than a bilateral relationship; it is a powerful force for progress. By working together, these two nations can lead the world in tokenisation, driving innovation, growth, and financial inclusion,” Coinbase said in a statement.
Why It Matters
By linking two of the world’s most important financial markets, the task force could set the global rulebook for digital assets, moving beyond today’s patchwork of national frameworks. If successful, the effort would give institutions the clarity and confidence needed to commit to the digital-asset space at scale.
For regulators, the challenge will be balancing innovation with security crafting a framework that accelerates adoption while protecting market stability. For industry players, the 180-day countdown is an opportunity to shape the future of finance on both sides of the Atlantic.
