The price of Ethereum slipped decisively below its recent consolidation range near $2,800, as renewed selling pressure from spot ETF outflows and cautious trader positioning weighed on short-term sentiment.
ETH was trading around $2,739 at press time, down roughly 8% over the past 24 hours, extending losses to nearly 10% over the past month. Despite the decline, trading activity surged, with 24-hour volume jumping 81% to $42.8 billion, signaling heightened participation during the sell-off.
Derivatives data shows risk reduction, not fresh bets
Derivatives markets suggest traders are cutting exposure rather than positioning for a rebound. Data from CoinGlass shows Ethereum futures trading volume climbed 55% to $90.55 billion, while open interest fell 11% to $34.29 billion.
This divergence points to heavy position turnover driven by long liquidations and forced exits, rather than new leverage entering the market. In short, traders are stepping back, not leaning into downside or upside bets.
ETF outflows pressure short-term demand
Spot ETF flows have added to the weakness. According to SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot ETH ETFs recorded $155 million in net outflows on Jan. 29.
Fidelity’s FETH saw $59.19 million in redemptions, while BlackRock’s ETHA lost $54.88 million. Weekly net outflows now stand at approximately $74 million.
ETF flows have become an increasingly important driver of Ethereum’s short-term price action. When redemptions rise, issuers may need to sell ETH into the market, adding pressure during already fragile trading sessions.
Adding to the cautious tone, a decline in the Coinbase Premium Index suggests limited demand from U.S.-based investors, reinforcing ETH’s recent range-bound and now downward behavior.
Sentiment strained by headlines and macro caution
Market sentiment has also been dented by a mix of network-related discussions and broader uncertainty. While debates around quantum-resistant upgrades highlight long-term resilience, reports of potential large-scale poisoning attacks have raised short-term concerns about user safety.
None of these developments pose an immediate operational threat, but together they have reinforced a defensive mindset among traders already unsettled by weak price action and outflows.
Ethereum technical outlook turns bearish
From a technical perspective, ETH’s drop below the $2,800–$2,900 range confirms that its recent consolidation phase has broken down. This zone had held for several weeks, and losing it suggests sellers have regained control.
Ethereum continues to print lower highs, with recent rebound attempts stalling near the $3,050–$3,100 resistance area. Price is now trading below its short-term moving averages, while the middle Bollinger Band near $3,070 has turned into a clear ceiling.
Volatility is expanding to the downside after weeks of tight trading. The Bollinger Bands are opening lower, and the relative strength index sits in the low-40s, signaling weakening momentum without yet reaching extreme oversold conditions.
The first meaningful support lies near $2,700, which aligns with recent lows and the lower Bollinger Band. A break below this area could open the door to deeper losses before buyers re-emerge.
For sentiment to improve, ETH would need to reclaim $2,950–$3,000 on a daily close. Until then, the trend remains tilted to the downside, with rallies likely to face selling pressure rather than spark a sustained recovery.
