While much of the crypto market drifted sideways during the Christmas slowdown, Pudgy Penguins’ ecosystem token PENGU moved sharply higher after the brand appeared on the iconic Las Vegas Sphere.
PENGU rallied roughly 7.5% from its December 24 low, snapping a short-term downtrend that had been in place since mid-December. The move stood out in a market that otherwise showed little holiday momentum.
A Rare Crypto Moment on a Global Stage
The campaign marked a major visibility milestone for Pudgy Penguins, making it only the second crypto-native brand to feature on the Las Vegas Sphere. The only other project to secure a placement on the massive LED-covered dome was Crypto.com, which showcased the Bitcoin logo on the venue last year.
The Sphere, known for hosting the world’s largest programmable LED display, attracts millions of visitors and generates massive social-media exposure. Appearing on it signals not just marketing spend, but cultural relevance well beyond crypto-native audiences.
By contrast, other meme-focused projects have struggled to secure similar exposure. Earlier this year, the team behind Dogwifhat raised close to $700,000 in a crowd-funded attempt to run a Sphere campaign but failed due to venue restrictions.
Price Reaction Stands Out in a Quiet Market
Despite being down more than 18% for the month, PENGU reversed course following the ad’s debut. At the time of writing, the token had retraced some gains but was still up over 6% on the 24-hour timeframe.
That performance contrasted sharply with broader market action. Major cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, BNB, XRP, and Solana traded mostly flat or posted modest gains of 0% to 2%.
From NFTs to Mainstream Brand
Launched in 2021, Pudgy Penguins began as a collection of 8,888 uniquely generated NFT characters. Unlike many NFT projects that faded as the market cooled, the brand has continued to expand through licensing, consumer products, and broader cultural partnerships.
PENGU serves as the official utility and governance token of the ecosystem, functioning as a social currency that unlocks digital experiences, in-game rewards, and future governance participation.
In an interview with CoinDesk, Pudgy Penguins’ chief of strategy and brand, Vedant Mangaldas, said the Sphere campaign cost approximately $500,000 and would run for several days starting December 24.
“It’s sort of showing that a crypto project can exceed and go out of crypto, touch the hearts and minds of everyday consumers,” Mangaldas said.
Not the First Mainstream Boost for PENGU
This isn’t the first time mainstream exposure has fueled a rally for PENGU. In September, the token jumped more than 10% after Pudgy Penguins was referenced in the earnings report and conference call of Bullish, a NYSE-listed firm.
