A shocking and brutal killing in Vienna has drawn international attention after a 21-year-old Ukrainian student was kidnapped, tortured for his cryptocurrency passwords, and burned alive in his car. Authorities say the crime reflects a disturbing global rise in violent attacks targeting crypto holders.
A Crime Fueled by Stolen Crypto
The victim, identified as Danylo K., was discovered dead on November 26 inside a burned Mercedes S 350D in Vienna’s Donaustadt district. Firefighters responded to alarms just after midnight, only to find the vehicle engulfed in flames and the victim’s body charred inside.
Investigators revealed that Danylo had been forced to hand over access to two cryptocurrency wallets, which were emptied shortly before his death.
Two Suspects Arrested After Fleeing to Ukraine
Police identified two suspects:
- A 19-year-old student, and
- A 45-year-old Ukrainian national
Both were captured in Ukraine on November 29, found in possession of large amounts of U.S. cash believed to have been obtained after converting the stolen crypto.
Austria has transferred the case to Ukrainian authorities, as no extradition agreement exists between the two countries.
Kidnapping Began in a Luxury Hotel Garage
The attack unfolded hours earlier in the underground garage of the SO/Vienna (Sofitel) hotel on Praterstraße. Witnesses reported hearing a loud confrontation. A hotel guest alerted staff, and a passerby later found a pool of blood in the stairwell.
According to police:
- Danylo was beaten in the garage
- Forced into the black Mercedes
- Tortured during the drive to Donaustadt until he surrendered his crypto passwords
After gaining access to his digital wallets, the attackers purchased gasoline and doused him with fuel in the back seat of the car.
Authorities say he was still alive when the vehicle was set ablaze.
Autopsy results suggest suffocation or heatstroke caused the death, with burns covering 80% of his body.
Crypto Wallets Completely Drained
Police confirmed that both cryptocurrency accounts were emptied after the torture. The victim’s family in Ukraine reported him missing on November 25 after noticing the funds had vanished and losing contact with him.
Sources report that Danylo was the son of Kharkiv’s deputy mayor and lived in a luxury apartment in Vienna’s Triiiple Tower with his partner and child.
Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov called the killing a “human tragedy.”
Rise of Violent ‘Wrench Attacks’ Targeting Crypto Holders
The murder highlights a growing threat known as “wrench attacks,” where criminals use physical violence to force victims to hand over crypto access.
Security researcher Jameson Lopp has tracked over 60 such attacks in 2025, a 33% increase from 2024 and a 169% rise since February alone.
Global hotspots in 2025 include:
- France – 14 cases
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
Recent examples include:
- A home invasion in British Columbia where attackers tortured a family for Bitcoin
- A car ambush in Oxford where masked assailants forced victims to transfer cryptocurrency
Analysts warn that rising crypto prices have turned holders into high-value targets for organized criminals.
