Ethereum price continues to hold near $2,500 after a strong mid-August rally, with a bullish ascending triangle forming on the 4-hour chart.
ETH has gained roughly 35% from its mid-August consolidation range and is now approaching an important resistance area between $2,533 and $2,550.
While the technical structure continues to favor buyers, Ethereum’s daily Relative Strength Index has climbed deep into overbought territory. Large liquidation clusters on both sides of the market could also increase volatility around the next breakout attempt.
Ethereum Holds Near $2,500 Despite Hotter US Inflation
Ethereum opened Aug. 26 at approximately $2,442.49 before recovering toward $2,500 over the following two days.
The rebound came despite hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data creating additional pressure for risk assets.
Headline Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation increased 0.2% month over month and 3.7% annually in July.
The annual reading came in above economists’ expectations of 3.6%.
Core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 0.2% monthly and 3.3% annually, matching expectations.
The hotter headline figure increased expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy, creating a more challenging environment for speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies.
ETH initially fell toward $2,430 following the inflation report but avoided a larger sell-off.
Buyers returned below $2,500, allowing Ethereum to preserve most of the rally that began near $1,870 in mid-August.
Treasury Buybacks Add Another Market Factor
Ethereum’s recovery also comes as the U.S. Treasury prepares to expand its long-dated debt buyback operations.
The Treasury plans to increase the maximum size of liquidity-support operations for securities with maturities between 10 and 30 years from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation beginning Sept. 9.
However, these operations are designed to improve liquidity in the Treasury market rather than directly inject capital into cryptocurrencies.
Any impact on Ethereum would therefore depend on broader changes in bond yields, the U.S. dollar and investor appetite for risk.
Ethereum Price Forms Ascending Triangle Below $2,533
Ethereum’s 4-hour chart shows one of the clearest technical signals currently shaping its short-term outlook.
ETH has formed an ascending triangle after rallying from below $1,950.
The pattern consists of repeated tests of horizontal resistance around $2,533 while the price continues producing higher lows.
Ascending triangles are generally considered bullish when buyers successfully push the price above horizontal resistance with sufficient trading volume.
For Ethereum, a confirmed move through $2,533 would also bring the nearby $2,550 resistance area into play.
ETH has faced several rejections around this zone since Aug. 21, making it one of the most important levels for the next stage of the rally.
ETH Momentum Still Favors Buyers
Several technical indicators continue to support Ethereum’s bullish structure.
The Aroon Up indicator stands at approximately 57.14%, compared with an Aroon Down reading of 21.43%.
The difference indicates that recent highs remain more dominant than recent lows.
However, Aroon Up has declined from earlier levels, suggesting the strength of the trend has started to moderate.
Chaikin Money Flow remains positive at approximately 0.06.
This indicates modest net buying pressure, although the reading is not strong enough to suggest the aggressive inflows that often accompany a major breakout.
A 4-hour close above $2,533 would strengthen the ascending-triangle setup and could put $2,600 within reach.
If buyers fail to clear resistance, ETH could retreat toward its rising trendline around $2,470.
$2,454 Becomes Important Ethereum Support
Ethereum’s daily chart places another important technical level at approximately $2,453.95.
This represents the 50% Fibonacci retracement measured from Ethereum’s January high around $3,399 to its June low near $1,509.
With ETH currently trading above this level, $2,454 has become one of the closest major support zones.
Holding it would help preserve the bullish structure.
If Ethereum successfully breaks higher, the next significant Fibonacci resistance sits around $2,677.04.
A move beyond $2,677 could then open the way toward the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement at approximately $2,953.07.
That would bring the psychologically important $3,000 level back into focus.
Ethereum RSI Signals Overbought Conditions
Despite the bullish technical structure, momentum indicators show that Ethereum’s rally has become stretched.
The daily RSI stands at approximately 77.4, significantly above the commonly watched overbought threshold of 70.
Its RSI moving average is lower at around 72.42.
An overbought RSI does not guarantee an immediate price decline. Strong bullish markets can remain overbought for extended periods.
However, it indicates that ETH has risen rapidly and may become increasingly vulnerable to profit-taking if buyers fail to produce another breakout.
Ethereum’s MACD remains bullish, with the MACD line above its signal line.
At the same time, the shrinking positive histogram indicates that upward momentum has started to lose some strength as ETH approaches resistance.
Ethereum Liquidation Map Highlights $2,550
Ethereum’s liquidation heatmap reinforces the importance of the $2,550 region.
A significant concentration of leveraged positions has developed around $2,540–$2,550, closely matching the resistance visible on Ethereum’s 4-hour chart.
Additional liquidity is positioned between approximately $2,570 and $2,600.
If Ethereum pushes decisively above $2,550, leveraged short sellers may be forced to close their positions.
Those liquidations can create additional market buy orders and potentially accelerate an upside move toward the higher liquidity zones.
However, traders should be cautious because a liquidation-driven move does not always result in a sustained breakout.
Price can briefly move above resistance to clear leveraged positions before reversing.
$2,470 and $2,410 Become Downside Targets
Significant liquidity is also positioned below Ethereum’s current price.
The nearest major cluster sits around $2,470–$2,480.
A larger concentration is visible around $2,410–$2,420.
These areas could become potential downside targets if Ethereum loses its important $2,454 Fibonacci support.
The $2,470 region is particularly significant because it also aligns closely with the rising trendline supporting Ethereum’s ascending-triangle structure.
A deeper decline below these areas could eventually put the former breakout region around $2,300 back into focus.
Ethereum ETF Flows Send Mixed Signal
U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs are providing a mixed near-term picture.
The products recorded approximately $192 million in net inflows on Aug. 26, suggesting substantial institutional demand during the session.
However, the following session reportedly produced approximately $11.4 million in net outflows.
The shift demonstrates that institutional flows remain volatile and may not provide consistent support for ETH in the immediate term.
Sustained ETF inflows would strengthen the bullish case, while continued outflows could make it more difficult for Ethereum to break through its current resistance zone.
Can Ethereum Price Break Above $2,550?
Ethereum’s next major move appears increasingly dependent on the narrow range between support around $2,454 and resistance around $2,533–$2,550.
A confirmed close above $2,533 would strengthen the ascending-triangle breakout.
Breaking $2,550 could then trigger short liquidations and potentially push ETH toward $2,600.
Above that, the next major technical target sits near $2,677.
A sustained breakout through $2,677 could eventually bring the $2,953–$3,000 region into focus.
The bearish scenario would begin if Ethereum fails to break resistance and falls below $2,454.
Such a move could expose the liquidity around $2,410 before potentially bringing the former $2,300 breakout area back into play.
For now, Ethereum’s broader structure remains bullish, but the overbought RSI and slowing momentum suggest the market is approaching an important decision point.
Whether ETH can turn the $2,533–$2,550 resistance zone into support will likely determine whether the next significant move is toward $2,600 and beyond or back toward lower support.
