Robinhood’s CEO, Vlad Tenev, is standing firmly behind the company’s new blockchain-based investment products even as regulators turn up the heat.
In an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, Tenev addressed the ongoing probe launched by the Central Bank of Lithuania, which is currently reviewing how Robinhood’s new tokenized stock offerings are structured and marketed.
According to Tenev, Robinhood is already in discussions with the Lithuanian regulator and is determined to demonstrate that its products are above board. He explained that these stock tokens are designed to help retail investors gain exposure to private companies an opportunity traditionally reserved for institutional investors or high-net-worth individuals.
“We’re confident, we think that these are not only important but they’ll withstand the highest form of scrutiny. So, we welcome the discussion with regulators as always,” Tenev said.
Controversy Over Private Company Shares
The CEO’s comments come amid controversy surrounding the new tokens, which Robinhood has promoted as a way for eligible EU-based users to gain exposure to private companies like OpenAI and SpaceX. The situation escalated when OpenAI publicly denied any affiliation with Robinhood and clarified that the platform isn’t authorized to sell equity in the company.
Despite the criticism, Tenev said interest in the concept is booming. He revealed that since Robinhood’s announcement, numerous private firms have reached out, curious about how they too might tokenize their shares to attract retail investors.
“Since our announcement, I’ve had a deluge of inquiries, private companies that actually want to access retail, to have their shares tokenized,” Tenev shared.
Regulatory Classification and Global Plans
On the thorny issue of how these tokens are classified, Tenev clarified that under the European Union’s MiCA framework, the products are technically considered derivatives. However, they still fall under the broader umbrella of crypto assets according to Europe’s digital asset regulations.
He also confirmed that Robinhood is in ongoing conversations with regulators outside the EU, including authorities in the United States and the United Kingdom. The company ultimately hopes to expand access to these tokenized investment products on a global scale.
