Bitget has appointed Oliver Stauber as CEO of Bitget EU, marking a major step in the exchange’s European expansion as it prepares for full compliance with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
As part of this move, Bitget confirmed that Vienna will serve as its official European headquarters. The Austrian hub will coordinate compliance, governance, and regulatory engagement across the European Economic Area (EEA) ahead of MiCA’s full implementation.
Why Vienna and why now?
Bitget’s decision comes as MiCA reshapes the regulatory landscape for crypto firms operating in Europe. The framework introduces a single, harmonized licensing regime covering governance standards, risk management, disclosures, and operational controls. Companies have until June 2026 to secure authorization under the new rules.
By establishing its EU headquarters early, Bitget is signaling a long-term commitment to operating within Europe’s regulatory boundaries rather than relying on fragmented national regimes.
Oliver Stauber’s regulatory background
Stauber brings deep experience navigating Europe’s crypto and financial regulations. He previously served as CEO of KuCoin EU Holding in Vienna and held senior leadership roles at Bitpanda, including Chief Legal Officer, where he oversaw legal, regulatory, and compliance strategy.
According to Bitget, this background makes Stauber well-positioned to lead its MiCA transition and oversee the creation of a compliant, scalable European operation.
“Oliver brings the regulatory fluency and operational discipline needed to build a governance-first setup in Europe,” said Bitget CEO Gracy Chen, adding that his appointment strengthens the firm’s confidence in its long-term EU strategy under MiCA.
A governance-first approach under MiCA
Stauber emphasized that MiCA is raising the bar for crypto service providers across Europe, shifting expectations toward stronger internal controls and transparency.
“MiCA is resetting how digital asset services are governed in Europe,” he said. “Our Vienna headquarters will support a regulated, scalable structure designed to serve EEA users reliably.”
Bitget said its European roadmap will focus on compliance foundations, supervisory cooperation, and operational transparency as it moves toward licensing.
Europe-wide race for MiCA licenses
Bitget’s announcement follows a broader push by crypto firms to secure MiCA approval before the transition period ends. Last week, Binance confirmed it submitted a MiCA license application in Greece, underscoring how major exchanges are racing to lock in regulatory access to the EU market.
With Vienna now set as its European base and a seasoned regulatory executive at the helm, Bitget is positioning itself to compete in a more tightly regulated but potentially more stable European crypto environment.
