First National Bank has launched cryptocurrency trading for South African customers, allowing users to start investing in digital assets with as little as R10 through the bank’s existing investment platform.
The new service gives eligible FNB customers access to Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Tether’s USDT stablecoin.
Crypto trading is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, unlike traditional stock markets that operate during set trading hours.
The service is powered by South African crypto exchange VALR, which is licensed as a crypto asset service provider by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority:
- FNB customers can start buying crypto from just R10.
- Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and USDT are currently supported.
- Crypto trading is available around the clock.
- VALR provides the crypto infrastructure behind the service.
- Customers cannot deposit or withdraw crypto to external wallets.
- The service is integrated into FNB’s existing investment products.
- FNB plans to add more investment options and educational material over time.
FNB brings crypto into its existing investment platform
FNB has added its new Crypto Investing service to four of its established investment products: Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor and Share Zero.
This allows existing investment customers to gain crypto exposure without opening a separate account directly with a cryptocurrency exchange.
Customers fund purchases using money already held in their FNB accounts.
The minimum investment is only R10, making the service accessible to users who may want to start with a relatively small amount.
FNB is part of FirstRand, one of South Africa’s largest banking groups.
FirstRand reported assets of roughly R2.7 trillion in its latest reporting period, giving FNB a significant existing customer base for its new crypto offering.
Customers can trade five major crypto assets
FNB’s initial crypto offering includes five digital assets.
Bitcoin and Ether give customers exposure to the two largest cryptocurrency networks by market value.
XRP and Solana provide access to two other major blockchain ecosystems.
USDT gives investors exposure to a stablecoin designed to track the value of the U.S. dollar.
FNB has not yet announced when additional cryptocurrencies will be added or which assets may be introduced next.
The bank appears to be taking a gradual approach, starting with a relatively small group of well-established digital assets.
FNB says customer demand drove the launch
Sizwe Nxedlana, CEO of FNB and RMB Private Banking and Wealth Management, said the bank introduced the service after customers asked for a broader range of investment options.
According to Nxedlana, the new product gives FNB customers access and exposure to a curated selection of crypto assets.
Bheki Mkhize, CEO of FNB Wealth and Asset Management, also said the bank had seen significant customer interest in cryptocurrencies.
At the same time, he warned that investors need to understand the risks involved.
Crypto markets can be highly volatile, and asset prices can move sharply over short periods.
Mkhize described the current launch as only the beginning of FNB’s broader crypto investment strategy.
The bank plans to introduce more investment options and expand educational content in text, video and audio formats.
VALR powers FNB’s crypto service
FNB is not building the crypto trading infrastructure entirely on its own.
South African exchange VALR provides the underlying cryptocurrency capabilities for the new product.
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority lists VALR as an authorized crypto asset service provider under Financial Services Provider number 53308.
Its authorization covers areas including advice, intermediary services and investment management.
VALR was among the earlier major South African exchanges to secure regulatory approval as the country moved toward formal oversight of the crypto industry.
This partnership allows FNB to offer digital asset exposure through infrastructure already operating within South Africa’s regulated crypto market.
South Africa has expanded crypto regulation
South Africa brought crypto asset service providers into its financial regulatory system after crypto assets were formally classified as financial products under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services framework.
By March 2026, the number of licensed crypto asset service providers in the country had reached 310, according to the South African Reserve Bank’s June Financial Stability Review.
The growing number of licensed firms shows how quickly crypto has become integrated into South Africa’s formal financial system.
The Reserve Bank has also reported significant stablecoin activity in the domestic market.
USDT remained the preferred stablecoin for local transactions.
Onchain USDT activity involving VALR, Luno and AltCoinTrader reached almost R27 billion during the year ending April 30.
That level of activity highlights the growing role stablecoins play within South Africa’s crypto market.
Customers cannot transfer crypto outside FNB
FNB’s crypto service has an important restriction.
Cryptocurrency purchased through the bank cannot be transferred out to an external wallet or another exchange.
Customers also cannot deposit crypto they already own into FNB.
This means users cannot buy Bitcoin through FNB and then send it to a self-custody hardware wallet.
They also cannot transfer existing BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL or USDT from another platform into their FNB investment account.
FNB describes the crypto service as being ringfenced within its own ecosystem.
The bank says this approach forms part of its security, compliance and South African exchange-control requirements.
As a result, the product is mainly designed for customers who want to gain investment exposure to crypto through their bank rather than use cryptocurrencies for onchain transfers.
FNB’s model differs from a normal crypto exchange
The inability to withdraw crypto creates a clear difference between FNB’s service and a standard cryptocurrency exchange.
On many crypto exchanges, customers can buy a digital asset and then move it into a self-custody wallet.
FNB users cannot do that under the current setup.
Instead, customers can buy, hold and sell their crypto positions inside the FNB platform.
For investors primarily interested in price exposure, this may provide a simpler experience.
For users who value self-custody or want to use their crypto on blockchain networks, the service is more limited.
South Africa is still developing cross-border crypto rules
The restrictions also come as South African regulators continue working on rules for international crypto transactions.
The South African Reserve Bank and National Treasury published a draft Crypto Assets Manual in August.
The proposal includes requirements for cross-border activity, reporting obligations and permissions for certain international crypto transactions.
Public comments on the draft closed on Sept. 30.
National Treasury and the Reserve Bank have not yet published the final version.
The uncertainty has already affected parts of the local crypto industry.
South African crypto firms had paused at least R2.2 billion worth of planned transactions while waiting for greater clarity around proposed exchange-control rules.
This regulatory backdrop helps explain why FNB has chosen to keep crypto trading inside its own ecosystem for now.
South African banks continue moving into crypto
FNB is not the only major South African bank expanding into digital assets.
Discovery Bank has introduced crypto access through a partnership with Luno.
That service allows customers to connect their bank and crypto exchange accounts to make cryptocurrency purchases.
Absa has taken a different approach by focusing more heavily on institutional custody.
The bank launched a digital asset custody service in September using Ripple technology.
That platform manages private keys for institutional customers such as asset managers, corporate clients and non-bank financial firms.
Bitcoin later became the largest asset held through Absa’s custody platform.
FNB is targeting retail investors
FNB’s strategy is more directly aimed at everyday retail investors.
Instead of building a separate institutional custody platform, the bank has placed crypto investing alongside products its customers already use for shares and other investments.
This reduces the number of steps required for customers who want crypto exposure.
Users can fund purchases directly from their bank accounts and manage crypto through familiar FNB investment products.
That could appeal to users who are interested in digital assets but do not want to open and manage an account with a standalone crypto exchange.
Crypto adoption in South Africa continues to grow
Crypto ownership is already significant in South Africa.
Business Day reported that more than 6 million South Africans hold crypto assets.
Assets held in custody across major domestic platforms including Luno, VALR and Ovex had also exceeded R25 billion by late 2025.
Those figures help explain why traditional banks are increasingly interested in providing crypto-related services.
A large number of customers already have exposure to digital assets, and banks appear to be looking for ways to keep more of that investment activity within their own platforms.
FNB plans to expand the service
FNB has not provided specific targets for customer numbers, trading volume or the total value of crypto it expects users to hold through the platform.
The bank has also not announced a timeline for adding more cryptocurrencies.
However, executives have made clear that the current product is intended to expand.
Future additions could include more investment options as well as broader educational support.
FNB plans to provide learning material in several formats to help customers better understand how crypto works and the risks involved.
FNB takes a controlled approach to crypto investing
FNB’s launch reflects a broader trend among traditional financial institutions.
Instead of leaving crypto completely outside the banking system, more banks are finding ways to offer digital asset exposure through regulated platforms.
FNB’s approach is relatively controlled.
Customers can access a limited selection of major cryptocurrencies, but they cannot move those assets outside the bank’s ecosystem.
That structure reduces some operational complexity while keeping the service closely aligned with local compliance requirements.
For customers who simply want to invest in crypto, the ability to start from R10 through an existing FNB account lowers the barrier to entry considerably.
At the same time, investors should understand that buying crypto through FNB is not the same as holding cryptocurrency in a private wallet.
The service is primarily an investment product rather than a full onchain crypto account.
As South Africa continues refining its regulatory framework, FNB’s launch shows how quickly crypto is becoming part of mainstream financial services in the country.
