U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis has once again called attention to Bitcoin’s role in America’s financial future, arguing that a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) could help offset the country’s mounting $37 trillion national debt.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Lummis wrote:
“I truly believe the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is the only solution to offset our national debt. I applaud President Donald Trump and his administration for embracing the SBR, and I look forward to getting it done.”
Her comments accompanied a clip from a Bloomberg Television interview in which she discussed growing federal interest in Bitcoin-backed reserves.
No Gold Conversion But Bitcoin Is on the Table
During the interview, Lummis was asked whether the U.S. government planned to convert its gold reserves into Bitcoin. She dismissed that idea but confirmed that the Trump administration is exploring other avenues to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
According to Lummis, Bitcoin’s deflationary design and scarcity make it an ideal hedge against inflation and a valuable long-term asset that could help reduce the nation’s debt burden over time.
“Bitcoin is an asset that will grow over time and help offset the rising debt,” she said.
Inside the BITCOIN Act of 2025
Earlier this year, Senator Lummis and Congressman Nick Begich introduced the BITCOIN Act of 2025, a legislative proposal outlining a national cryptocurrency strategy that includes the creation of a government-controlled Bitcoin reserve.
Under the bill, the U.S. government would purchase 200,000 BTC annually for five years, holding the assets for at least two decades as a hedge against inflation.
Lummis has previously suggested that if the U.S. were to accumulate one million Bitcoin around 5% of the total future supply it could “cut our debt in half in 20 years.”
Reports Suggest the U.S. Already Holds $14 Billion in Bitcoin
The idea of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is gaining momentum amid reports that the U.S. government may already hold roughly $14 billion worth of Bitcoin, allegedly seized from online scam operations based in China and Cambodia.
Other nations, including Brazil, Sweden, and the Philippines, are also said to be exploring Bitcoin reserve frameworks, viewing BTC as both a monetary hedge and a geopolitical asset.
Market Outlook: Bitcoin Holds Above $100,000
Despite the long-term optimism, Bitcoin’s short-term performance remains volatile. Data from crypto.news shows BTC trading near $101,535, down nearly 10% this week after briefly dipping below $100,000.
While the market shows early signs of stabilization, resistance near $102,000 continues to limit bullish momentum.
Still, Lummis’ remarks have reignited political interest in Bitcoin’s role as a strategic national asset, framing it as more than a speculative investment but a potential cornerstone of U.S. economic policy.
Senator Cynthia Lummis’ renewed push for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve highlights a growing belief in Washington that digital assets could serve as a fiscal safeguard in an era of rising debt and inflation. As the U.S. faces mounting financial challenges, Bitcoin’s scarcity and resilience may soon earn it a place in America’s long-term economic strategy.
