Three of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturers Bitmain, Canaan, and MicroBT are relocating significant portions of their manufacturing operations to the United States in response to heightened trade tensions and new tariff policies introduced by the Trump administration.
According to a recent Reuters report, these firms collectively control over 95% of the global Bitcoin mining hardware market, and their U.S. expansion marks a major realignment in the cryptocurrency hardware supply chain.
Trump Tariffs Drive Strategic Relocation
The move comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s renewed tariff war, which includes sweeping duties on Chinese tech exports under the “Liberation Day” trade policy. These tariffs have compelled top Chinese firms to seek domestic production options within the U.S. to mitigate financial risks and protect market share.
- Bitmain, the largest of the three by sales volume, began ramping up production in the U.S. as early as December 2024, shortly after Trump’s election victory.
- Canaan launched its U.S. manufacturing operations in April 2025. Senior executive Leo Wang emphasized that the move was necessary to “shield the company from punitive import tariffs.”
- MicroBT confirmed it is implementing a “localization strategy” to avoid supply chain disruptions and reduce exposure to escalating duties.
A Shift in the Global Mining Supply Chain
The Chinese trio’s migration to the U.S. could significantly alter the geography of Bitcoin’s infrastructure, especially as North America now accounts for over 30% of global mining activity. Manufacturing rigs closer to U.S. mining hubs could improve distribution speed, reduce costs, and lower regulatory risks.
However, the pivot also raises national security concerns.
Security and Supply Chain Concerns in the U.S.
Critics, including Auradine, a U.S.-based mining hardware manufacturer backed by MARA Holdings, have expressed growing alarm over the influx of Chinese hardware. Sanjay Gupta, Auradine’s Chief Strategy Officer, warned that “hundreds of thousands of Chinese mining rigs are plugged into the U.S. electrical grid,” posing security and supply chain vulnerabilities.
Gupta added:
“While over 30% of global Bitcoin mining occurs in North America, more than 90% of mining hardware originates from China representing a major imbalance of geographic demand and supply.”
Attorney John Deaton, known for his advocacy in U.S. crypto law, echoed these concerns, stating that overreliance on Chinese mining tech creates a “choke point” for American miners. He warned that China could, in theory, restrict exports or manipulate supply, potentially disrupting Bitcoin’s network stability and undermining investor confidence in the U.S.
Fallout From China’s Crypto Ban
China’s government banned cryptocurrency activity in 2021, citing risks to financial stability. This led to a global exodus of Chinese crypto firms. While some, like Canaan, have relocated headquarters to Singapore, they continue to maintain operational footprints in mainland China.
This decentralization has fragmented what was once a vertically integrated crypto supply chain, stretching from Chinese factories to global mining farms.
As the U.S.-China tech rivalry intensifies, the shift of Bitcoin mining hardware manufacturing to American soil represents both an economic opportunity and a geopolitical challenge. While Chinese firms aim to bypass tariffs and secure market access, their growing footprint in the U.S. could accelerate calls for domestic self-reliance, tighter regulation, and supply chain scrutiny.
For now, the move marks a turning point in the global Bitcoin mining industry potentially reshaping where and how the infrastructure of digital currencies is built.
