State Street Corp., one of the most established names in traditional finance, is taking its biggest step yet into the world of digital assets. The Boston-based custody bank has unveiled a new institutional platform designed to support tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and crypto-backed investment funds, marking a significant expansion beyond its long-standing back-office role.
According to Bloomberg, the platform will allow State Street to develop and manage money-market funds and exchange-traded funds while also offering cash-like digital products such as tokenized deposits and stablecoins. The initiative will involve collaboration between the firm’s in-house asset management division and external investment managers.
The announcement follows a key move last month, when State Street partnered with Michael Novogratz’s Galaxy Digital to launch a tokenized fund. That partnership signaled State Street’s intent to move beyond administrative services and become more directly involved in shaping digital-asset products for institutional investors.
State Street is not alone in this shift. A growing number of major financial institutions are rolling out tokenized offerings as regulatory conditions become more welcoming to cryptocurrencies. Bank of New York Mellon has already introduced tokenized deposit services, while asset managers such as Fidelity, Franklin Resources, and JPMorgan have launched tokenized money-market funds. Even traditionally cautious firms like T. Rowe Price are now exploring crypto-focused products.
With $51.7 trillion in assets under custody and administration, State Street says its new platform is built to meet institutional demand for secure, compliant, and regulated access to digital assets. Rather than catering to speculative trading, the focus is on integrating blockchain-based products into familiar financial structures used by large investors.
The move highlights a broader transformation underway on Wall Street. As tokenization gains traction, cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based assets are increasingly being woven into mainstream finance, signaling a shift from niche experimentation toward institutional-grade adoption.
