Binance is shaking things up for margin traders. The world’s largest crypto exchange has announced that it will adjust the collateral ratios on over 10 assets in its Portfolio Margin program, starting this week. The move involves both increases and decreases some assets will see higher collateral requirements, while others will drop.
These changes directly impact how much borrowing power traders have and could influence liquidation thresholds. If you’re using Binance’s portfolio margin feature, you’ll want to pay close attention.
What’s Changing And When?
Binance will roll out the changes in two batches:
August 5 (Collateral Ratios Increase)
These assets will become more secure as collateral, which means users can borrow more against them:
- Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL): 30% → 50%
- Hyperlane (HYPER): 10% → 30%
- Berachain (BERA): 10% → 30%
- HEI: 10% → 30%
- BABY: 10% → 30%
- INIT: 10% → 30%
These increases could give margin traders more flexibility, allowing for larger position sizes backed by these tokens.
August 8 (Collateral Ratios Decrease)
These assets will have reduced borrowing power, making positions more vulnerable to liquidation if not adjusted:
- Polkadot (DOT): 80% → 75%
- Optimism (OP): 65% → 55%
- Ethereum Name Service (ENS): 60% → 50%
- Chiliz (CHZ): 50% → 40%
- Holo (HOT): 50% → 35%
- Loopring (LRC): 40% → 25%
Lower collateral ratios mean higher risk if prices fall, positions using these tokens could get liquidated faster.
What Is a Collateral Ratio Anyway?
In simple terms, the collateral ratio is how much you can borrow based on your current holdings. For example, if a token has a 50% collateral ratio, you can borrow up to half of the token’s value. If that ratio drops, so does your borrowing limit.
These changes also affect Binance’s unified maintenance margin rate (uniMMR), which determines how much collateral must be maintained to keep positions open. If you’re using any of the affected assets as collateral, now’s the time to review your risk exposure.
What Traders Should Do
- Check your margin positions before each adjustment date (Aug. 5 & Aug. 8).
- Adjust your collateral to avoid unexpected liquidations.
- Keep an eye on Binance’s Portfolio Margin page for real-time updates.
Why It Matters
While these updates may seem routine, they can dramatically shift your trading capacity. Increasing the collateral ratio makes an asset more favorable for borrowing, while a reduction tightens your margin room. In volatile markets, this could mean the difference between riding out a dip or facing a sudden liquidation.
Whether you’re long or short, make sure you’re not caught off guard. With Binance updating these ratios, staying informed is more important than ever.
