Social media platform X has announced plans to roll out “Smart Cashtags,” a new feature aimed at reducing ticker confusion and spam across cryptocurrency discussions, as scrutiny from European regulators and criticism from crypto users continue to mount.
The announcement was shared by Nikita Bier, who explained that Smart Cashtags will allow users to link ticker symbols directly to specific digital assets or smart contracts. When typing a dollar sign, users will be prompted to select the exact token or contract address, ensuring conversations point to the correct asset rather than ambiguous or misleading tickers.
Once selected, Smart Cashtags will unlock dedicated asset pages that include real-time price charts, market data, and related posts. Users will also be able to tap on cashtags to explore broader discussions tied to that specific asset, making it easier to follow legitimate conversations and avoid confusion caused by similarly named tokens.
X is currently collecting feedback on the feature and is targeting a potential public release as early as next month.
The concept was further illustrated by Solana Labs, which shared an example showing a drop-down list of assets appearing after typing a dollar sign. The demonstration included Bitcoin, BONK, Base, and Solana-based tokens, each linking to curated pages with charts and commentary.
The rollout comes amid heightened pressure on X from European regulators. The European Commission recently extended an order requiring the platform to retain internal data related to its algorithms and content moderation practices through the end of 2026. Meanwhile, French prosecutors opened an investigation in mid-2025 into alleged algorithmic bias and unauthorized data extraction, which X has described as politically motivated.
Last month, the European Union fined X 120 million euros for violating transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act, citing failures related to subscription verification, advertising disclosures, and researcher access to public data.
Against this backdrop, platform owner Elon Musk said X will begin open-sourcing its ranking and advertising algorithms. Musk stated that the full codebase for recommendation systems will be published within days and updated every four weeks with detailed developer notes explaining changes.
Crypto users have long complained that X’s algorithms suppress legitimate cryptocurrency discussions while allowing bot-generated spam to thrive. Ki Young Ju, founder of CryptoQuant, accused the platform of failing to curb automated spam, claiming bot activity tied to crypto surged dramatically in a single day.
Ju also criticized X’s paid verification system, arguing that it enables bots to “pay to spam” while authentic users lose visibility. According to him, verification has not solved the platform’s core bot-detection issues and may have worsened spam across crypto discussions.
In a now-deleted post, Bier suggested that some of the visibility problems stem from user behavior rather than algorithmic suppression. He argued that many crypto accounts post excessively, burning through their reach by flooding feeds with repetitive or low-value messages. Because X limits how many posts users see daily, accounts that over-post may exhaust their visibility before sharing meaningful content.
The comment sparked debate across crypto Twitter, with some agreeing that engagement farming has hurt discourse, while others pointed to declining reach even among low-frequency posters since late 2024.
Despite ongoing controversy, X remains a central hub for real-time crypto communication, hosting traders, developers, analysts, journalists, and researchers who rely on the platform for instant updates on market movements and protocol developments.
Smart Cashtags mark the latest step in X’s push to keep finance and cryptocurrency at the core of its ecosystem. Analysts say the feature could significantly improve how users navigate crypto discussions by reducing asset misidentification, limiting spam, and making reliable price data easier to access.
