Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has weighed in on President Trump’s proposed Crypto Strategic Reserve, advocating for a Bitcoin-only approach as the best option for the United States. Armstrong shared his views on X in response to White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks, outlining two potential strategies for structuring the reserve.
Bitcoin as the Modern Equivalent of Gold
Armstrong’s first strategy suggests that the U.S. should treat Bitcoin as the modern successor to gold, focusing solely on BTC. He believes this approach would provide clarity, stability, and transparency while minimizing government interference in the broader cryptocurrency market.
“Just Bitcoin would probably be the best option – simplest, and clear story as successor to gold,” Armstrong stated.
This approach aligns with Bitcoin’s growing reputation as a store of value and a hedge against inflation. By making Bitcoin the primary asset in the reserve, Armstrong argues that the U.S. could establish a clear and compelling strategy for digital asset adoption.
Alternative Market Cap-Weighted Strategy
As an alternative, Armstrong suggested a market cap-weighted index of cryptocurrencies. Under this model, assets in the reserve would be distributed based on their respective market sizes. For example, if Bitcoin accounts for 50% of the total crypto market and Ethereum makes up 20%, the reserve would allocate funds accordingly.
This method would prevent favoritism and allow the reserve to evolve in tandem with the market. However, Armstrong maintained that a Bitcoin-only approach remains the most straightforward and effective option.
Trump’s Push for a Crypto Strategic Reserve
Armstrong’s comments come amid President Trump’s recent push to establish a strategic cryptocurrency reserve that includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, and XRP. The proposal has sparked debate across financial and cryptocurrency circles.
Proponents argue that the reserve could drive widespread adoption, boost investment, and position the U.S. as a leader in digital assets. Others, however, remain skeptical about the feasibility of the plan.
Skepticism from Crypto Leaders
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has dismissed the initiative as political posturing, arguing that without congressional approval or a revaluation of gold, the government lacks the necessary funds to execute large-scale crypto purchases.
“Nothing new here. Just words. Lmk when they get congressional approval to borrow money and or revalue the gold price higher. Without that they have no money to buy #bitcoin and #shitcoins,” Hayes remarked.
The Crypto Market’s Response
Following Trump’s March 2 announcement of a crypto strategic reserve, the cryptocurrency market surged by 8%, reflecting strong investor interest. As the White House prepares for an upcoming Crypto Summit, discussions surrounding the reserve’s structure and implications are intensifying.
With influential figures like Brian Armstrong weighing in, the debate over whether a Bitcoin-only approach or a diversified crypto reserve will prevail remains a key focus in the evolving landscape of digital assets and U.S. economic policy.
