Lombard is taking a major step toward merging Bitcoin with the creator economy. The company has partnered with Story, a blockchain protocol for programmable intellectual property (IP), to build Bitcoin-backed financial rails that will automate royalty payments and enforce licensing agreements on-chain.
According to an Oct. 16 press release, Lombard’s Bitcoin infrastructure will be integrated directly into Story’s protocol. The goal is to address two long-standing issues for creators and studios: slow, fragmented royalty payments and ineffective enforcement of IP licenses.
Bitcoin as Collateral for Creative Rights
Lombard’s model uses Bitcoin not simply as a payment asset, but as collateral that backstops on-chain IP agreements. This creates a new form of crypto-economic insurance: if a licensee fails to meet their royalty obligations, Bitcoin collateral can be automatically liquidated by smart contracts—turning what would usually be a months-long legal battle into instant settlement.
How Story Turns IP Into Programmable Digital Assets
Story is a layer-1 blockchain that transforms IP such as characters, music, and artwork—into programmable digital assets with embedded licensing terms. This enables creators to tokenize copyrights and manage usage directly through smart contracts.
