Regulators in British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, are moving forward with new legislation that would permanently ban cryptocurrency mining projects from connecting to the province’s power grid. In a statement released by the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions, officials said the proposed policy is part of a broader strategy to allocate clean electricity to projects that generate stronger economic and social benefits for British Columbians.
“Our new allocation framework will prioritize vital growth in sectors like mining, natural gas, and lowest-emission LNG, while ensuring our clean energy is directed to projects that deliver the greatest benefit to British Columbians,”

The ministry highlighted that in other regions, unregulated demand from energy-intensive sectors such as crypto mining has led to higher power rates for households, prompting governments to rethink how electricity is distributed.
Energy Statutes Amendment Act to Enforce the Ban
Under the proposed Energy Statutes Amendment Act, the province plans to restrict electricity access for new data centers, AI operations, and cryptocurrency mining projects.
This law would make permanent the temporary moratorium introduced in December 2022, which instructed BC Hydro the province’s main power utility to stop approving new grid connections for crypto miners.
BC Hydro, Canada’s third-largest electricity provider, relies mainly on hydroelectric power, which has made the province an attractive destination for miners seeking low-cost, renewable energy.
However, officials say the grid must now serve communities and industries that are driving electrification, decarbonization, and employment growth.
At the time of the original moratorium, Minister Josie Osborne explained that the pause was meant to preserve capacity for residents and sustainable businesses.
“We are suspending electricity connection requests from crypto mining operators to preserve our electricity supply for people who are switching to electric vehicles and heat pumps, and for businesses and industries that are undertaking electrification projects that reduce carbon emissions and generate jobs and economic opportunities,” Osborne said.
The new legislation will make that suspension permanent, cementing British Columbia’s shift away from supporting crypto mining operations.
