Monad’s highly anticipated mainnet launch has hit a bump in its first week, with users reporting spoofed ERC-20 token transfers appearing across the network. While the fake transactions don’t actually move funds, they’re crafted to look real a tactic commonly used by scammers on newly launched EVM chains.
Reports of the spoofing activity began circulating on Tuesday, Nov. 25, less than 48 hours after MON went live. Soon after, Monad’s co-founder and CTO James Hunsaker took to X to warn users that scammers were broadcasting transfers that appeared to come from his own wallet.
What’s Really Happening?
Spoofed transfers are not hacks or exploits. Instead, they’re fraudulent on-chain events that appear in explorers and wallets but involve no actual transfer of tokens. Because ERC-20 is simply an interface standard, anyone can deploy a contract that emits misleading logs designed to mimic real transfers.
Hunsaker shared examples of transactions he never initiated, emphasizing that although they look legitimate, they cannot move tokens or drain wallets.
The real danger is psychological scammers try to trick users into clicking phishing links, “claim” pages, or malicious contracts that request approvals.
The trend is especially common during the early days of new EVM chains, when user excitement is high and dApps launch rapidly.
Community Reaction
Warnings spread quickly on X, briefly making “#MonadScam” trend before the situation was clarified. Monad confirmed that:
- No funds were lost
- This is not a network exploit
- Wallet balances remain unaffected
Users praised the team’s fast response, especially in the chaotic post-launch environment where thousands are interacting with the chain for the first time.
Why Attackers Targeted Monad So Quickly
The timing is no coincidence. The MON airdrop fueled enormous early activity:
- 76,000+ wallets claimed MON
- 3.33 billion tokens distributed
- Valued at about $105 million at launch
The hype created an easy opportunity for scammers similar to previous phishing campaigns that faked Monad’s airdrop portal during the testnet phase.
Beyond the airdrop, Monad’s reputation has drawn significant attention. Built by former Jump Trading engineers, the high-performance EVM chain launched with support from over 280 projects and has raised more than $260 million from major investors including Paradigm, OKX Ventures, and Electric Capital.
Its testnet numbers were staggering:
- 2.6 billion transactions
- 300 million+ wallets
- 41 million blocks
MON debuted at $0.02, dipped briefly, and has since surged more than 50%, trading around $0.045 at press time.
Safety First: What Monad Advises
As activity ramps up, the team is urging users to:
- Stick to verified block explorers
- Ignore urgency-based messages
- Double-check all contract interactions
- Avoid clicking links claiming surprise airdrops or unexpected token transfers
Spoofed transfers may look real, but they have no effect on your wallet unless you interact with malicious prompts.
