Bitcoin remains locked below the psychologically important $90,000 level, but beneath the surface, large players appear to be steadily soaking up supply keeping the breakout question very much alive.
According to Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, a major “Bitfinex whale” has been buying roughly 450 BTC per day at current prices. That pace now roughly matches Bitcoin’s daily mining output, meaning new supply is effectively being neutralized by a single buyer. Back noted the accumulation started closer to 300 BTC per day before accelerating.
Broader on-chain data reinforces the accumulation narrative. Analytics firm Santiment reported that wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC often referred to as whales and sharks added more than 36,000 Bitcoin over a nine-day stretch, even as market sentiment remained cautious.
Despite the buying, Glassnode paints a more restrained picture. In its latest report, the firm described Bitcoin as still trading within a moderate bear phase, with price bounded by cost-basis dynamics. The market mean is acting as downside support, while the short-term holder cost basis continues to cap upside momentum.
Glassnode noted that the recent rally partially filled an “air gap” left by prior declines, redistributing coins from earlier holders to newer buyers. Above current levels, however, supply remains dense particularly between $98,000 and $100,000 where coins are gradually maturing into long-term holdings.
Losses have been dominated by investors who bought three to six months ago, with additional selling from six- to twelve-month holders. These cohorts appear to be exiting as price revisits their entry ranges. On the profit side, Glassnode observed a rise in low-margin realizations, suggesting many traders are taking small gains or exiting at breakeven rather than holding for a larger move.
Derivatives data highlights a fragile market structure. Glassnode reports that dealer positioning shows short gamma below $90,000 and long gamma above it, creating a zone where price can move sharply with limited liquidity. Futures participation remains thin, with changes in open interest occurring without meaningful volume a sign of position churn rather than fresh leverage entering the market.
Options markets also reflect near-term caution, with implied volatility reacting more strongly at the front end than in longer-dated contracts, indicating traders are focused on immediate downside risks.
On Bitfinex, margin long positions declined from recent highs but ticked up slightly during the latest dip, signaling selective dip-buying. Still, the broader trend in leverage over the past month remains downward.
Bitcoin is currently trading just under $90,000 after briefly dipping toward $88,000 during a recent risk-off episode tied to tariff headlines. Resistance is stacked between $90,000 and $93,400, while strong support lies in the $84,000–$88,000 range.
Looking ahead, most analysts expect Bitcoin to remain volatile rather than trend cleanly. A common base case over the next three to six months is a wide range between $80,000 and $110,000, as institutional buyers continue to accumulate via ETFs while macro forces rate-cut expectations, trade tensions, and policy uncertainty periodically trigger sharp liquidations.
On the upside, post-halving dynamics and growing institutional liquidity could support a retest of the prior $108,000 peak and a push into low six-figure territory if global risk sentiment improves. On the downside, a sustained break below $80,000 would raise the risk that this cycle’s peak is already in, potentially opening the door toward the mid-$60,000s, especially if macro tightening or regulatory shocks hit spot ETFs.
For now, Bitcoin remains stuck but with whales quietly absorbing supply, the stalemate near $90K may not last forever.
