Ethereum layer-2 network Starknet is gearing up for one of its most important upgrades yet. Version 0.14.0 is set to go live on September 1, bringing a wave of improvements including decentralized sequencing, pre-confirmations, and a new fee market.
The upgrade, approved by community vote and confirmed in an Aug. 18 post on X, promises faster transaction confirmations, lower costs, and stronger decentralization all critical steps in Starknet’s long-term roadmap.
Decentralized Sequencing and Pre-Confirmations
At the heart of v0.14.0 is the introduction of decentralized sequencing. Instead of relying on a single sequencer, the network will rotate among multiple independent sequencers using Tendermint consensus. This design strengthens censorship resistance, ensures fair ordering of transactions, and increases fault tolerance.
To enhance user experience, the update also adds “pre-confirmations” a new transaction status that enables sub-second latency. While block times will remain in the 4–6 second range, most transactions will now feel near-instant, with results visible in under a second. This is expected to significantly improve usability during periods of high network traffic.
Fee Market and Technical Enhancements
Starknet’s new fee market takes inspiration from Ethereum’s EIP-1559 model. Fees will be set in FRI, establishing a predictable base price for layer-2 gas and reducing dependence on Ethereum gas prices. This shift makes costs more stable and easier to forecast.
Other technical improvements include:
- Updated mempool architecture for smoother performance
- New transaction statuses in RPC 0.9.0
- Multi-block processing to speed up proving efficiency
Although StarkWare will still oversee sequencing in this version, the roadmap shows gradual steps toward full decentralization in future releases.
The upgrade will require a brief 15-minute network pause during migration, during which transactions will be temporarily halted.
Ecosystem Growth Ahead of the Upgrade
The upgrade follows a busy summer for the Starknet ecosystem:
- Extended DEX launched on Aug. 12, offering perpetual trading with 50+ pairs and leverage up to 100x.
- The community voted on SNIP-31, a proposal to enable Bitcoin staking via tokenized assets like WBTC and tBTC.
- In July, Starknet shifted to STRK as the sole gas token, rolled out its fee market, and improved block times.
These developments reflect Starknet’s broader mission: to push scalability, decentralization, and adoption within the Ethereum rollup ecosystem.
Outlook
With v0.14.0, Starknet is tackling two of the biggest challenges for Ethereum rollups: speed and decentralization. By delivering near-instant confirmations and moving toward a multi-sequencer system, the network is laying the groundwork for mass adoption while preserving security.
The September 1 upgrade will mark another step forward in Starknet’s bid to cement itself as a leader in the Ethereum layer-2 landscape.
