Bitwise has officially launched its NEAR-focused exchange-traded fund on NYSE Arca, giving U.S. investors a new way to gain direct exposure to the NEAR token through a traditional brokerage account.
The Bitwise NEAR ETF began trading on Sept. 29 under the ticker NRR. The fund directly holds NEAR rather than relying on futures or other derivatives, which means growing demand for ETF shares could eventually translate into additional purchases of the underlying token.
The launch comes after NEAR experienced a strong rally in the weeks leading up to the ETF debut. The token was trading near $4.93 around the time of launch, putting its market capitalization at roughly $6.5 billion.
Bitwise brings direct NEAR exposure to U.S. investors
NRR gives investors access to NEAR without requiring them to open an account on a cryptocurrency exchange, manage private keys, or maintain their own crypto wallet.
According to Bitwise, the ETF carries a 0.75% management fee and is structured to hold NEAR directly.
That structure could become important if the product attracts meaningful inflows.
When investors create new ETF shares, the fund may need to purchase additional NEAR to support those shares. Bitwise’s filings show that creation and redemption units consist of 10,000 shares, creating a potential connection between demand for NRR and demand for NEAR itself.
However, the ETF’s launch does not automatically mean the NEAR price will move higher. Much will depend on how much capital flows into the product after trading begins.
ETF inflows could create new NEAR demand
One of the biggest factors investors will now watch is the amount of money entering NRR.
Because the fund holds NEAR directly, sustained ETF inflows could potentially increase spot-market demand for the cryptocurrency.
NEAR had already recorded a significant move before the ETF officially launched.
The token was trading near $2.62 on Sept. 16 before climbing toward $5 as expectations around the Bitwise ETF strengthened.
By Sept. 25, NEAR had gained roughly 43% over seven days after NYSE Arca approved the fund’s listing application. The token had also risen sharply on a year-to-date basis.
That means part of the excitement surrounding the ETF may already have been reflected in NEAR’s price before NRR started trading.
Actual ETF inflows could therefore become one of the clearest indicators of whether institutional and brokerage-based demand continues after the initial launch excitement fades.
Bitwise plans to stake NEAR held by the ETF
The Bitwise NEAR ETF has another feature that makes it different from a simple spot-holding product.
Bitwise plans to stake part of the fund’s NEAR holdings.
Staking involves committing tokens to support the operation and security of a proof-of-stake blockchain. In return, participants can earn staking rewards.
Bitwise said those rewards will be reflected in the ETF’s net asset value, allowing shareholders to benefit indirectly from the staking activity.
The company referenced an annualized NEAR staking reward of around 5% as of Sept. 25, although staking yields can change over time and are not guaranteed returns for ETF investors.
The staking structure could also reduce the amount of the fund’s NEAR holdings that remain immediately available for trading.
If NRR attracts significant investment and more tokens are placed into staking, the fund could gradually hold a larger amount of NEAR outside normal liquid market circulation.
Bitwise’s previous staking research estimated that roughly 45% of NEAR’s supply was already staked as of July.
Still, staking comes with risks. These can include validator issues, slashing, operational problems and potential liquidity limitations during periods when the fund needs to process redemptions.
NEAR enters ETF launch after strong September performance
The ETF debut comes during a period of rising activity across the NEAR ecosystem.
On Sept. 23, NEAR spot trading was introduced on Hyperliquid through a NEAR/USDC market.
At the time, NEAR perpetual open interest on the platform was around $344 million, while positive funding rates indicated stronger demand from traders holding long positions.
Activity surrounding NEAR Intents has also attracted attention.
Earlier in September, confidential total value locked connected to the protocol moved above $70 million, triggering the first snapshot under its incentive program.
NEAR Intents is designed to make cross-chain transactions easier by allowing users and software agents to execute actions across multiple blockchain networks without manually managing every step of the transaction process.
AI infrastructure remains part of Bitwise’s NEAR thesis
Bitwise has also highlighted NEAR’s growing role in artificial intelligence infrastructure as part of its broader investment case.
The company argues that blockchain networks could become increasingly important as AI agents begin making payments, exchanging assets and interacting with digital services independently.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has pointed to NEAR Intents as an example of infrastructure that could support transactions initiated by software and AI agents.
According to figures released by Bitwise around the ETF launch, NEAR Intents has processed more than $32 billion in transaction volume, compared with less than $1 billion roughly a year earlier.
NEAR has also been expanding the role of its token within AI-focused services.
Earlier this year, the network introduced a staking-based payment system that allows users to lock NEAR and receive monthly computing credits that can be used for AI services.
At launch, the system supported dozens of AI models, including models from major technology companies.
Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley said the company expects AI agents to play a much larger role in economic activity as software increasingly interacts, transacts and coordinates on behalf of users.
Can the NEAR ETF help push the price higher?
The Bitwise NEAR ETF could create an additional source of demand for NEAR, particularly if NRR attracts consistent investment from traditional market participants.
Its direct-holding structure means that rising ETF assets could eventually require Bitwise to acquire more NEAR, while staking may keep part of those holdings committed to the network rather than actively circulating in the market.
However, the ETF alone does not guarantee further price gains.
NEAR had already rallied significantly ahead of the launch, meaning investors will likely focus on actual NRR inflows, trading volume and growth in assets under management to determine whether demand remains strong.
The ETF’s longer-term impact could therefore depend less on the launch itself and more on whether investors continue putting capital into the product in the weeks and months ahead.
For now, NRR gives U.S. investors another regulated route to gain exposure to NEAR while adding a new institutional product to Bitwise’s growing lineup of cryptocurrency investment funds.
