As crypto scams become more sophisticated, the Ethereum Foundation is stepping in to strengthen user protection. The foundation has officially backed Security Alliance (SEAL), sponsoring a dedicated security engineer to help track and shut down crypto drainers targeting Ethereum users.
The move comes as phishing attacks and wallet-draining schemes continue to evolve, often outpacing traditional security defenses. According to SEAL, the Ethereum Foundation reached out late last year to support its “Trillion Dollar Security” initiative, which focuses on protecting Ethereum at a system-wide level.
What crypto drainers are and why they matter
Crypto drainers are malicious toolkits, often sold as a service on underground forums, that allow scammers to steal funds without needing advanced technical skills. Attackers typically set up fake websites that mimic well-known crypto protocols or wallets.
Once a user connects their wallet and approves what looks like a harmless transaction, the drainer quietly empties the wallet of valuable assets.
“These scams work because they exploit trust and habit,” SEAL explained. “The transactions look familiar, but the outcome is devastating.”
Well-known drainer operations such as Angel and Inferno have repeatedly resurfaced in new forms, even after public takedowns, highlighting how persistent and adaptable these threats have become.
Ethereum Foundation’s role in the fight
Under the new sponsorship, the Ethereum Foundation is funding a SEAL security engineer whose sole focus is identifying, tracking, and neutralizing active drainers across the Ethereum ecosystem. The role sits within SEAL’s intelligence team and is designed to provide faster response times and deeper visibility into emerging attack patterns.
Data cited by SEAL from ScamSniffer suggests crypto drainers have been responsible for nearly $1 billion in losses over the past few years. However, there’s also some progress: drainer-related thefts fell to $84 million in 2025, the lowest annual figure recorded so far.
SEAL says its monitoring tools and coordinated response efforts have played a key role in that decline.
A broader, industry-wide effort
Founded in 2023 by white-hat hacker samczsun, SEAL was built as a rapid-response hub for on-chain security threats. Its Trillion Dollar Security dashboard tracks risks across six critical areas, including smart contracts, infrastructure, monitoring, incident response, and social governance.
Major wallet providers such as MetaMask and Phantom have already joined SEAL’s real-time phishing defense network, alongside other ecosystem players like WalletConnect and Backpack.
SEAL says the Ethereum Foundation partnership is just the beginning. The nonprofit is actively encouraging other blockchains and foundations to adopt similar sponsorship models to help protect users at scale.
As crypto adoption grows, efforts like this underline a simple reality: security is no longer optional it’s foundational.
