Massive crypto heist triggers Monero surge as investigators trace laundering across 300 wallets and 20 exchanges
In one of the largest crypto heists in history, an elderly American citizen has been identified as the victim of a $330.7 million Bitcoin theft, according to renowned blockchain investigator ZachXBT. The attack, carried out on April 28, involved the theft of 3,520 BTC through a highly coordinated social engineering operation.
The shocking revelation emerged as ZachXBT shared findings from an ongoing on-chain investigation, stating on X (formerly Twitter):
“Update: It is confirmed to be a social engineering theft from an elderly individual in the US.”
Laundering Trail: Over 300 Wallets and 20+ Exchanges
Following the theft, the stolen Bitcoin was swiftly funneled through more than 300 wallets and laundered across at least 20 cryptocurrency exchanges, making the funds nearly impossible to trace using conventional methods. Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Monero (XMR) played a significant role in this laundering process.
ZachXBT noted that the sudden spike in Monero’s price jumping over 50% from $228 to $347 before correcting to $295 was not due to technical upgrades or renewed investor interest, as initially speculated. Instead, the price movement was likely driven by the influx of laundering activity tied to the stolen Bitcoin.
A Carefully Executed Attack
Unlike previous large-scale crypto hacks attributed to nation-state actors such as North Korean Lazarus Group, ZachXBT clarified that this theft was not carried out by a known hacking syndicate. Instead, it appears to have been a targeted attack on an individual holder, designed to exploit trust and bypass traditional cybersecurity defenses.
“You can fingerprint the type of attack/attacker pretty well if you spend all of your time tracking illicit activity onchain,” ZachXBT added, emphasizing that the theft bore the signature of sophisticated social engineering a tactic that manipulates individuals into revealing sensitive information or access credentials.
A Growing Threat to Long-Time Holders
With a value exceeding $330 million at the time of the theft, this breach now ranks as the fifth-largest crypto hack in history. It underscores a growing trend in which long-time cryptocurrency holders often those who invested early—are becoming prime targets for social engineering scams and phishing schemes.
As of now, no formal law enforcement involvement has been confirmed, and the attacker’s identity remains unknown.
Community Calls for Vigilance
The case has sparked renewed discussions within the crypto community about the importance of security hygiene, particularly for older or less tech-savvy investors. As crypto matures and early adopters age, they may be more vulnerable to manipulation, especially as social engineering techniques become more convincing and customized.
ZachXBT’s timely investigation not only exposed the mechanics behind the heist but also highlighted how blockchain transparency, paired with skilled analysis, remains a crucial tool in combating crypto-related crime.
