Despite being labeled a store of value and a potential alternative to gold by high-profile policymakers, Bitcoin’s recent price action suggests a different narrative—one that more closely aligns with high-beta tech stocks than traditional safe havens.
In a recent market outlook, analysts at Swiss crypto bank Sygnum challenge the widely held belief that Bitcoin (BTC) is the digital counterpart to gold. Instead, they argue that Bitcoin is increasingly being treated as the de facto proxy for the broader crypto market, which could significantly shape its future trajectory.
Not a Tech Play, but Not Yet Digital Gold
While Bitcoin’s underlying value has long been tied to its role as a store of value, Sygnum points out that only a small fraction of its price is driven by actual network applications.
“In reality, Bitcoin is mostly not a tech play, as only a small fraction of its value is derived from applications and other related activity on the network,” the report notes. “Most of its value hinges on it being accepted as a store-of-value asset.”
Yet, its trading behavior resembles that of volatile tech stocks, a trend that may undermine its status as a stable, long-term reserve asset. This “tech-like” behavior is evidenced by sharp price swings and correlation with risk-on assets.
Bitcoin Over Ethereum?
Sygnum’s analysis also touches on investor preferences between Bitcoin and Ethereum. Traditionally, Ethereum was considered the crypto market proxy due to its dominance in smart contract applications and decentralized finance (DeFi). However, Bitcoin is now taking that role, the analysts say, particularly in the eyes of new investors.
“This is also evidenced by the poor adoption of the Ethereum ETFs — new investors for now conclude that a Bitcoin holding is sufficient to have exposure to the crypto market,” the report explains.
The tepid response to spot Ethereum ETFs reflects this shift, as more market participants opt to allocate funds solely to Bitcoin, viewing it as representative of the crypto sector as a whole.
Implications for Bitcoin’s Future Role
Sygnum cautions that Bitcoin’s evolving perception could hinder its progression as a reserve asset, especially if it continues to behave like “the Nasdaq on steroids.” The bank suggests that regulatory and political developments, particularly from the U.S. administration, will play a key role in shaping whether Bitcoin can reclaim its status as “digital gold” or remain a volatile market indicator.
As Bitcoin sits at a crossroads between asset class and sector proxy, its future may ultimately depend on investor perception and government policy more than network fundamentals.
