Stablecoin giant Tether just took a major step in helping U.S. authorities crack down on crypto-linked terror financing. In coordination with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Tether froze $1.6 million in USDT linked to wallets allegedly used by a Gaza-based money transfer network accused of supporting terrorist activities.
The move was announced in a July 24 blog post, where Tether confirmed its role in a broader DOJ civil forfeiture case involving roughly $2 million in crypto. As part of the asset recovery, Tether also reissued new USDT to replace the frozen funds.
Freezing Funds, Fighting Crime
This isn’t Tether’s first rodeo. The company has now frozen over $2.9 billion in USDT connected to illicit activity, working with more than 275 law enforcement agencies across 59 countries. So far, over 5,000 wallets have been blocked most involving U.S. authorities.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino highlighted the event as a reminder of the unique power of blockchain. Unlike traditional finance, he argued, crypto is more traceable and transparent a feature that helps authorities track and seize illegal funds faster.
“We’re committed to supporting investigations around the world and protecting the crypto ecosystem from abuse,” Ardoino said.
High-Profile Cases Keep Piling Up
This latest enforcement action adds to an already busy year for Tether. Just last month, the DOJ praised the firm’s cooperation in a $225 million asset recovery operation. Earlier this July, Brazilian authorities credited Tether for blocking $6.2 million in a cross-border money laundering bust.
Other notable interventions include:
- $23 million frozen from the sanctioned Russian exchange Garantex
- $9 million linked to the Bybit hack
Each case further cements Tether’s role as a key player in crypto law enforcement efforts a narrative the company is clearly leaning into as it eyes a major return to the U.S. market.
Tether Eyes Regulated U.S. Stablecoin Launch Under GENIUS Act
After years of tension with American regulators, Tether is plotting a comeback. The company is preparing to launch a regulated, institutional-grade stablecoin designed for payments, interbank settlements, and trading infrastructure and it’s doing so under the newly signed GENIUS Act, which President Trump enacted last week.
While there’s no firm launch date yet, Tether is already:
- Engaging in talks with auditors
- Considering a U.S.-focused stablecoin with enhanced transparency and disclosures
- Positioning itself to meet strict regulatory standards
This next chapter could mark a major shift for Tether from being the go-to stablecoin for global crypto markets to a compliant powerhouse in the U.S. financial system.
Final Take
Tether’s aggressive stance on fighting crypto crime combined with its new U.S. ambitions signals a major pivot. The company is no longer just a dominant force in digital payments. It’s trying to become a trusted, compliant leader in the global financial ecosystem, one that plays by the rules and helps write them, too.
Stay tuned. Tether’s next move could reshape the future of stablecoins in the U.S. and beyond.
