U.S. stock markets ended April on a mixed note Wednesday, capping off a volatile month dominated by economic contraction and renewed concerns over trade policy. The S&P 500 edged up 0.15%, the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.86%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 141 points, as investors reacted to disappointing GDP figures and tariff-related uncertainties.
According to data released by the Commerce Department, the U.S. economy contracted by 0.3% on an annualized basis in Q1, reversing a 2.4% gain from the previous quarter. This marked the first negative GDP print since 2022 and raised fresh concerns about the health of the post-COVID recovery.
Tariffs and Imports Weigh on Growth
The contraction was driven in part by a 41% surge in imports, as businesses rushed to stockpile goods ahead of newly imposed tariffs under President Trump’s “reciprocal trade” policy. Consumer spending also slowed to its weakest pace in over a year, and government expenditures declined sharply, further dragging on GDP growth.
Earlier in the month, markets had shown signs of optimism when Trump temporarily paused some tariffs and suggested progress in talks with countries like India. However, investor confidence quickly waned after an April 2 announcement of sweeping new tariffs, which sent the S&P 500 down over 11% at one point in April.
Trump Responds to Economic Fallout
In a post on Truth Social, Trump distanced himself from the current market turbulence, declaring, “This is Biden’s Stock Market, not Trump’s,” and blaming what he called a “Biden Overhang” for poor economic performance. He urged Americans to remain patient, asserting that his policies would take time to produce results.
Despite the messaging, analysts say the recent downturn reflects growing unease about the lack of clarity in trade policy under Trump’s second term. “This is very clearly brought on by the uncertainty surrounding the tariffs, period,” said Kelly Bouchillon, managing partner at Sound View Wealth Advisors.
Corporate America Feels the Pressure
Major U.S. firms are also reacting to the changing trade landscape. Companies like First Solar and GE HealthCare issued downward revisions to their earnings forecasts, citing tariff-related headwinds. Nvidia shares dipped as well, dragged down by disappointing results from Super Micro Computer, a key partner in the AI hardware space.
Outlook Uncertain as Markets Seek Direction
With inflation concerns simmering and consumer spending weakening, investors are bracing for more volatility in the months ahead. The market’s response to Trump’s evolving trade strategy and whether it leads to stabilization or further turbulence will be closely watched.
As April closes with the S&P 500 still in correction territory, Wall Street is hoping for more predictability and policy clarity, both of which remain elusive in the current political and economic climate.
