Tether, the issuer behind the world’s leading stablecoin USDT, has taken a significant step in expanding its real-world asset portfolio by acquiring a 31.9% stake in Elemental Altus Royalties, a Canadian gold mining company. The deal, finalized through its investment arm, involves the purchase of 78.4 million shares from La Mancha Investments in a private transaction completed on June 10.
Strategic Investment in Gold-Backed Real Assets
According to Tether’s press release, this move is intended to reinforce the backing of its gold-pegged digital asset, Tether Gold (XAUT), and to further diversify its reserves through exposure to gold production. Elemental operates on a royalty and streaming model, providing investors with access to gold revenues without the direct operational risks associated with mining.
“This model aligns with Tether’s preference for strategic, low-risk exposure to real-world assets,” the company stated. The investment grants Tether indirect access to global gold output while maintaining a risk-conscious approach to asset accumulation.
Option Agreement with Abu Dhabi-Based Firms
In parallel with the share acquisition, Tether signed an option agreement with AlphaStream Limited and its subsidiary Alpha 1 SPV Limited, both privately held entities based in the Abu Dhabi Global Market. The agreement grants Tether the right to purchase an additional 34.4 million Elemental shares after October 29, 2025, unless an early redemption is approved by Elemental.
This extended option gives Tether a potential pathway to significantly increase its stake in the Canadian gold royalty company, further reinforcing its strategy of anchoring its digital tokens to real-world commodities.
A Broader Vision for Asset-Backed Tokens
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that the acquisition signals the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening the foundation of its ecosystem.
“By gaining exposure to a diversified portfolio of gold royalties through Elemental, we are strengthening the backing of our ecosystem while advancing Tether Gold and future commodity-backed digital assets,” said Ardoino.
As of today, Tether holds over 100,000 Bitcoin and approximately 80 tons of physical gold in reserve resources that support not only its USDT token but also XAUT, its gold-backed stablecoin.
Building an Ecosystem of Self-Sovereign Infrastructure
The Elemental acquisition is just one of several strategic moves Tether has made in recent months. The company recently announced plans to open-source its Bitcoin Mining Operating System, allowing third-party companies to operate independent mining infrastructure without reliance on external software providers.
