Loopring, one of the earliest projects to introduce zero-knowledge (zk) rollup technology on Ethereum, has officially shut down its decentralized exchange (DEX) and automated market maker (AMM).
The decision marks the end of a platform that once stood at the forefront of Ethereum scaling innovation. After years of declining user activity, growing competition, and business challenges, the Loopring team concluded that the protocol was no longer sustainable.
The closure also highlights a broader trend in the crypto industry, where even pioneering projects are struggling to survive as technology evolves and market conditions remain challenging.
Loopring Ends Trading Services
In an announcement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Loopring team confirmed that all trading services have stopped immediately.
The protocol’s relayer—the infrastructure responsible for processing trades—has also been shut down, bringing the platform’s decentralized exchange operations to an end.
According to the developers, the decision was driven by three primary factors:
- Weak user adoption
- Limited business development capabilities
- Strong competition from newer Ethereum scaling solutions
Rather than continuing to operate what the team described as an unsustainable service, developers chose to wind down the platform.
A Pioneer Overtaken by New Technology
Loopring played a significant role in the early development of Ethereum Layer-2 scaling.
The project was among the first to implement zk-rollup technology, allowing users to trade with lower fees and faster transaction speeds while benefiting from Ethereum’s security.
However, blockchain technology has advanced significantly in recent years.
The Loopring team acknowledged that its architecture lacked support for a virtual machine, limiting smart contract composability and restricting the development of more complex decentralized applications.
Meanwhile, newer zkEVM (Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) networks have gained popularity by offering developers greater compatibility with Ethereum while supporting a broader range of decentralized finance applications.
As a result, Loopring’s specialized design gradually became less competitive.
Developers Admit Business Shortcomings
In addition to technical limitations, the team acknowledged that commercial execution also contributed to the platform’s decline.
According to the announcement, Loopring’s developers excelled at building innovative technology but struggled to expand the project’s business operations and ecosystem.
The team also noted that several cryptocurrency exchanges delisted the LRC token during 2026, accelerating an already difficult situation.
Those developments reduced liquidity, visibility, and user activity, making long-term sustainability increasingly difficult.
Users Will Receive Their Funds
Although trading has ended, Loopring said users will still receive any remaining assets held on the platform.
The team plans to calculate final account balances before distributing funds directly to users’ Ethereum wallets in batches.
Importantly, Loopring also confirmed that it will cover the Ethereum gas fees associated with these withdrawals, ensuring users can recover their assets without incurring additional costs.
Wallet Services Had Already Closed
The latest shutdown follows an earlier decision to discontinue Loopring’s wallet services.
In July 2025, the project announced the closure of its wallet products after citing ongoing scaling and operational challenges.
With the decentralized exchange now offline, the latest announcement effectively marks the end of Loopring’s remaining core services.
From $760 Million TVL to Just $8 Million
Loopring’s decline becomes even more apparent when compared with its peak during the previous crypto bull market.
At its highest point in November 2021, the protocol held approximately $760 million in total value locked (TVL).
According to Layer-2 analytics platform L2Beat, that figure has since fallen by nearly 99%, leaving roughly $8 million locked on the network before the shutdown.
The native LRC token experienced a similar decline.
After reaching an all-time high of approximately $3.75 during the 2021 market rally, the token has fallen to around $0.01, reflecting the platform’s shrinking ecosystem and declining demand.
Remembering the GameStop Partnership
One of Loopring’s most significant milestones came in 2021, when the project partnered with GameStop to power the retailer’s NFT marketplace.
The marketplace officially launched the following year and was viewed as one of the highest-profile blockchain partnerships during the NFT boom.
Although the collaboration initially generated excitement, the broader NFT market weakened considerably, limiting the long-term impact of the partnership on Loopring’s ecosystem.
Crypto Project Closures Continue in 2026
Loopring is far from the only crypto project to shut down this year.
According to RootData, more than 60 cryptocurrency projects and protocols have ceased operations during 2026.
Several closures have been linked to prolonged market weakness, declining user activity, and changing technology trends.
Recent examples include:
- Pyra, which announced plans to wind down after losses connected to the Drift exploit.
- Carrot, a Solana-based yield protocol that also cited Drift-related losses.
- Botanix Labs, a Bitcoin Layer-2 developer that concluded user demand had not grown enough to support long-term operations.
These closures highlight the increasingly competitive nature of the blockchain industry, where technological innovation alone is no longer enough to guarantee long-term success.
Competition in Ethereum Layer 2 Continues to Intensify
Ethereum’s Layer-2 ecosystem has expanded rapidly over the past several years.
Today, developers can choose from numerous scaling solutions offering:
- zkEVM compatibility
- Optimistic rollups
- Lower transaction fees
- Full smart contract support
- Larger developer ecosystems
As newer platforms continue improving scalability and developer experience, older Layer-2 projects face increasing pressure to remain competitive.
Loopring’s shutdown demonstrates how quickly blockchain infrastructure can evolve, even for projects that helped pioneer the technology.
The Bottom Line
Loopring’s decision to shut down its decentralized exchange marks the end of one of Ethereum’s earliest zk-rollup pioneers.
Despite introducing groundbreaking scaling technology and securing notable partnerships during the previous crypto cycle, the project ultimately struggled with declining adoption, limited business growth, and increasing competition from newer Ethereum Layer-2 networks.
The team has pledged to return all remaining user funds while covering Ethereum gas fees, bringing an orderly conclusion to the platform’s operations.
Loopring’s closure also reflects a broader reality within the cryptocurrency industry: innovation alone is not enough. Long-term success increasingly depends on sustained user adoption, strong ecosystem development, and the ability to evolve alongside rapidly changing blockchain technology.
