Ant Digital, the tech division of Jack Ma’s Ant Group, is taking a bold step into blockchain finance by tokenizing billions of dollars’ worth of renewable energy infrastructure. The goal: to make clean energy investments globally accessible through tokenized real-world assets (RWAs).
Turning Energy Assets Into Tokens
According to a September 9 Bloomberg report, Ant Digital has already started uploading data from wind turbines, solar panels, and other energy infrastructure onto its AntChain blockchain.
The company plans to issue real-world asset tokens (RWAs) backed by these energy projects. These tokens could then be used to raise funding for further development of renewable energy projects.
Some tokenization efforts are reportedly already underway, though Ant Digital has not disclosed specific details.
Global Investment Potential
Ant Digital is considering listing these energy tokens on decentralized exchanges, which would, in theory, allow investors worldwide to gain exposure to China’s green energy sector.
However, the company stressed that such a move would depend heavily on regulatory approval in China. For now, the firm has declined to comment further.
Why This Matters: China’s Green Energy Push
China remains the world’s largest carbon emitter, but it has also become the largest investor in renewable energy. Data from Renewable Capacity Statistics shows that renewables now make up over 50% of China’s total power generation capacity.
The country sees renewables as key to its energy independence, particularly given its limited oil reserves. This strategy was also cited as one reason behind China’s 2021 ban on crypto mining, which consumed vast amounts of fossil-fuel-based electricity.
The Bigger Picture
By tokenizing renewable energy assets, Ant Digital could create a new global market for sustainable finance one where investors anywhere can directly support China’s transition to clean energy.
If successful, it would mark a significant evolution in how real-world asset tokenization links blockchain technology with infrastructure financing. But for now, the scale of Ant’s plan will hinge on how far regulators are willing to let it go.
