Ethereum’s price is on the move and corporate buyers are fueling the rally. But while the market is cheering, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has a word of caution: don’t get overleveraged.
BitMine Immersion Technologies is ignoring that advice and going all-in. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on August 12, the Delaware-based company announced it’s expanding its at-the-market stock offering from $4.5 billion to a staggering $24.5 billion a fivefold jump in just weeks.
From Stock Sales to ETH Stash
The plan? Sell shares gradually through Cantor Fitzgerald and use the cash for:
- Buying more Ethereum
- Paying down debt
- Funding capital projects
- Potential acquisitions
BitMine already holds 1.15 million ETH (worth about $5 billion) more than any other corporation. By comparison:
- SharpLink (Joe Lubin): 598,800 ETH
- The Ether Machine: 345,400 ETH
- Ethereum Foundation: 232,600 ETH
The announcement alone helped push ETH up 5.4% in 24 hours, echoing Bitcoin’s 2020–2021 bull run, when large corporate buys became self-fulfilling price drivers.
Vitalik’s Take: Opportunity with a Warning
On a recent Bankless podcast, Buterin acknowledged the upside: corporate holders like BitMine make ETH accessible to investors who can’t (or won’t) buy it directly.
Still, he’s wary. Overleveraging, he warned, could turn corporate treasuries into a dangerous game of “leveraged poker,” risking a liquidity crunch if markets turn.
It’s a softer stance than last year, when Buterin called Bitcoin treasury strategies “batshit insane” and mocked reliance on institutions like BlackRock. Now, Ethereum’s corporate accumulation gets his qualified blessing a pivot not lost on industry watchers.
A Crowded Dance Floor
Critics note the double standard: what was reckless for Bitcoin is now cautiously celebrated for Ethereum. But for now, money talks.

Still, as corporate treasuries swell, the risk rises. If these leveraged bets sour, the fallout could spread far beyond crypto circles.
