In a quiet but significant shift, Binance is partnering with Spain’s BBVA bank to give crypto traders more control and more peace of mind when it comes to storing their digital assets.
According to a report from the Financial Times, the world’s largest crypto exchange is working directly with BBVA, Spain’s third-largest bank, to act as a trusted independent custodian. Sources close to the matter say this new setup allows customers to keep their funds off the exchange, stored safely in BBVA accounts rather than on Binance itself.
What’s Changing?
Instead of holding your digital assets directly on Binance or via its in-house custodian Ceffu, traders will now have the option to store assets in U.S. Treasuries at BBVA. Binance will still accept those assets as collateral for trading but they’ll remain securely under the custody of the bank.
Why the change? According to one insider, the move is a proactive step to prevent “a hypothetical FTX 2.0.” Binance is trying to ensure that customer funds are never caught in the same kind of trap that left FTX users out of pocket.
After FTX, Trust Is Everything
The FTX collapse in late 2022 left deep scars on the crypto industry. One of the biggest failures? The lack of third-party custody. FTX stored customer funds on its own books, blurred the lines between client assets and corporate money, and even let its sister firm Alameda Research access the funds.
When FTX went bankrupt, billions in customer funds were tied up and for many, lost.
Since then, independent custody has become a top priority across the crypto space. It means your funds are:
- Stored separately from the exchange’s own finances
- Audited independently
- Subject to stricter oversight
This level of separation provides traders with greater transparency and lower counterparty risk something Binance is keen to highlight in its new partnerships.
Banks Are In, Exchanges Are Stepping Back
Binance has already begun expanding its custody network in Europe, previously tapping Switzerland’s Sygnum and FlowBank to provide similar services.
One insider noted that some institutional traders prefer banks because they want their collateral stored in a familiar, regulated environment especially with the volatility and risk that come with crypto platforms.
This collaboration with BBVA is a clear sign that Binance wants to work more closely with traditional finance, giving traders the best of both worlds: crypto trading flexibility and traditional financial security.
Looking Ahead
For Binance, this is more than just a safety measure. It’s a strategic shift toward building a more resilient and trustworthy trading environment one that won’t repeat the mistakes of FTX.
And for traders? It’s one more reason to stay in the game with confidence.
