Crypto ATM scams are becoming a serious problem in Australia, with the latest incident leaving victims out of a staggering $2.5 million.
Fraudsters are increasingly using crypto ATMs to exploit vulnerable people especially older Australians in scams that are spreading rapidly across the country. In the most recent case, 15 victims from Tasmania collectively lost millions, according to local media reports on Friday, June 11.
Tasmania Police say the consequences for many victims have been devastating and, in some cases, life-altering. The average age of those affected was 65, with typical individual losses around $165,000. Shockingly, one person lost as much as $750,000 to the scammers.
“In some cases, it delayed retirements,” said Tasmania Police Detective Sergeant Turner. “It meant that victims were forced to sell assets and then become reliant on social services and payments.”
How the Scams Work
These scams usually start with scammers contacting victims under false pretenses. They might pretend to be a romantic partner, a government official, or tech support staff. Using threats, intimidation, or promises of high investment returns, they pressure people into depositing cash into crypto ATMs.
Once the cash is converted into crypto and sent to the scammer’s wallet address, the money is essentially gone for good. Unlike traditional bank transfers, crypto transactions can’t be reversed or retrieved.
“Common scams these victims were falling to were romance scams and investment scams,” Detective Sergeant Turner explained. “Also, government and authority scams, and tech support scams, where you receive a phone call from an agency purporting to be who they’re not.”
Authorities Responding With Stricter Rules
Recognizing the growing problem, Australian regulators are starting to crack down. On June 3, new cash limits were introduced for crypto ATMs in an effort to reduce the risk of scams.
Meanwhile, other countries are taking even more drastic steps. On June 9, New Zealand announced a complete ban on crypto ATMs, aiming to make it harder for criminals to convert illicit cash into crypto.
A Cautionary Tale for Crypto Users
The recent wave of scams serves as a stark reminder: while crypto ATMs offer convenience, they’re also an attractive tool for scammers. Authorities continue to warn the public to stay vigilant, question unsolicited requests for money, and remember that legitimate organizations will never demand crypto payments under threats or pressure.
As crypto adoption grows, protecting vulnerable individuals from sophisticated scams remains an urgent priority for law enforcement and regulators alike.
